New Games For Old Systems

Post by BurningDoom »

I know they're out there. Stuff like Halo for Atari 2600, or Battle Kid (I think that was the name of it) for NES. Or I saw a released not-too-long ago first-person shooter on Dreamcast with a horror-theme.

Has anyone here played these? How are they compared to some of the best of the system's original library?

The ones that end up getting released on some form of physical media tend to be around the level of quality of licensed games. Even if I'm not super interested in these games, I like to buy them to help support such an idea. I love seeing new games come out for retro consoles.

Beggar Prince, Legend of Wukong and Pier Solar are some good Mega Drive/Genesis homebrews.

On the Dreamcast, there is Dux, Last Hope Pink Bullets, and Kousoku Striker (Fast Striker). Sturmwind is gonna come out soon too. Some of these Dreamcast games also got released on Neo Geo MVS/AES.

They are good, in my opinion -- better than the cheap knock-off stuff from bad developers back in the day, even if not quite as good as the most stellar examples from the prior library. The great thing about the physical media games is that, more often than not, they are done by people who genuinely care about the play quality and have a passion for the console, thus more likely resulting in a great product. I, personally, am looking forward to trying the Battle Kid sequel.

Beggar Prince and Legend of Wukong are translated versions of old Genesis games from way back in the day. Pier Solar is a completely new game, though.

Oh, that's right. They are old Chinese and Taiwanese games or something.

I watched some YouTube videos of Battle Kid today. It looks like Mega Man meets Metroid. Looks like a lot of fun.

Rockman plus Metroid plus I Wanna be the Guy is exactly what it is.
