There are a lot of Inazuma Eleven games for various Nintendo platforms. They are extremely popular in Japan. I haven't played any of them yet myself but I have a feeling they are a lot better than simulation soccer games.

I just started playing Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 is US I think) and I think it would probably work well for someone who's into anime. Seems fun so far, even though I'm not greatest fan of anime.
