"It is used to emulate an original 3-button gamepad for Genesis, because some games may glitch when you use a 6-button controller. To emulate an original 3-button controller, you should insert a game cartridge into Genesis console and hold the mode button before turning it on. Then turn it on, wait while the game boots up, and release the mode button. Now your controller should work as 3-button one..."

Neeop sir, I didn't.
Re: List of Games Not Compatible With the 6-Button Controller
I believe in Fatal Fury 2 you can taunt your opponent with it. Lost Vikings and Battlecorps both use it as a normal gameplay button as well. I know some games you can assign it to switch items or even act as a weapon. There are many 6-button games that use it. It's a standard button on the controller just like any other, it just pulls double-duty when the controller first receives power.Inazuma wrote:First time I've heard of this. Can you give us an example?Redifer wrote:The MODE button is also used for special functions in certain games that assign a function to that button. Many games use it.

I honestly never knew what the mode button was for until I read this thread.Breetai wrote:I thought that was common knowledge here. Maybe it is forgotten knowledge?

Awesome. So the 6 button controller is actually a 7 button controller. I learned something new.Redifer wrote: I believe in Fatal Fury 2 you can taunt your opponent with it. I feel like a Mega Drive noob around you, despite having played it since it was new.
*edit*
Game Sack Joe. Maybe you can make a video about the Mega Drive mode button.

@Breetai:
Yeah, the mode button on the controller is obviously broken. You don't even need to test it to know that. The button just wiggles around in it's place.
And yeah, the mode button is mentioned on Wikipedia. But I wouldn't have looked that up because I didn't know that the mode button was the issue. I simply thought it was incompatible after testing 2 different controllers on 2 different games.

No to threadjack, but since it seems the question has been answered, and it seems silly to start a new thread for this, are there two official versions of the six button pad?

There's 3 or 4 versions of the 6 button and 2 versions of the 3 button as far as I know.Jamisonia wrote:No to threadjack, but since it seems the question has been answered, and it seems silly to start a new thread for this, are there two official versions of the six button pad?
Theres at least one tiny 6 button, a medium size one, and a wireless one.
Then the 3 button there were the original 1989 controllers with red that are absolutely terrible (It has the most stiff dpad I've ever had the displeasure of using) and the other one has white instead of red.

Re: List of Games Not Compatible With the 6-Button Controller
Most of the six button ones I've seen are the normal looking ones. They have an extreme curvature, and look like a frown. But I have another type that has turbo control, and that one seems more rare, so I wasn't sure it was official.

Have you tried opening up the casing to see if you can fix it? Otherwise, I guess you'll just have to either use a 3-button controller (I like them, as long as they have the red highlights and not the white. They look better!), or buy another 6-button
The older design has an entirely different d-pad style. It looks the same at first glace, but if you open the casing and look inside, it's completely different (and overly complicated) from the newer ones. If you prefer the newer ones, I recommend switching the casing. You definitely want the one with the red highlights. It looks SOOOO much cooler!Then the 3 button there were the original 1989 controllers with red that are absolutely terrible (It has the most stiff dpad I've ever had the displeasure of using) and the other one has white instead of red.
