A good friend of mine is sending me the first three Castlevanias which led me to ask: What is the first Video game trilogy?
If smb 2 and castlevania 2 didn't stray so far away from the other installments, smb wins by release dates. But all three ninja gaiden games followed the same formula, making it more of a complete trilogy.
And please, leave the star wars (unless you're talking about super swars)and lotr discussion out of this.

Ultima 1-3, 1980-1983. Wizardry 1-3 was a bit later, 1981-1983.

Re: The First Video Game Trilogy
Since there are more entries in SMB and Castlevania than just the first 3, I assume you simply mean games that made it to at least a 3rd sequel or more.

^Beat you he did.
And yeah, by trilogy (and I might be taking artistic liberties with the definition) I mean three games consistent in story, design, and gameplay. I think the police quest games fall into this definition, but smb does not. Ultima and Wizardry definitely meet the criteria.

Re: The First Video Game Trilogy
As for SMB, are we talking about the SMB2 we got here, or the original (that we got as Lost Levels)
I think if you dismiss the really obscure title, it fits really well as a trilogy, although the third still blows the others out of the water.

The Crash Bandicoot Trilogy was pretty good. Yes, there was a 4th game, spin-offs, and others, but I don't consider them true Crash games, since Naughty Dog did not make them. (They're also terrible.) Crash Team Racing is also a fantastic game, and one of the best Kart Racers ever (made by Naughty Dog, NOT to be confused with Crash Tag Team Racing which was terrible.)
