^this.

I don't ever buy a game and then just not play it. But I have a few that for various reasons I've ended up putting on hold until later notice (Hopefully not too later).

Persona 4 (Actually got pretty far in this one - have everyone in my party except for Naoto)
Catherine
Valkyria Chronicles
Dragon Age: Origin's
Nightshade

I think it's assumed we have at least seen a few reviews and played through 10-15mins of a demo at the very least. After all, most people will at least do this before buying the game as games cost 5-10 times what a DVD or CD costs so they're not exactly casual purchases. But you do make a good point. I think it's more a case of "which games do you own that you haven't played yet, that you intend to play because you think they'll probably be decent", after all, let's face it, there are collectors here who may well be trying to get a complete collection for a console and as such may be stuck with games like Superman 64 (N64), Pac-Man (Atari 2600), Fester's Quest (NES) or Bubsy 3D (PSOne) in their collection just for completions sake. They'll never play these peices of crap, but they don't plan to, which is I think the dividing point for this thread.

I haven't opened my copy of Gotcha Force (GC) yet.
The box to MegaMan Legends (PC) remains locked with a layer of dust.
Manny from Grim Fandango (PC) is still staring at me behind a thin layer of plastic.
I think I have a sealed copy of Lunar: the Silver Star (SCD) on a bookshelf. (Nope; open, but plastic wrap is still there.)
Heck, my entire PSx/PS2 library exists... without me ever owning a PSx/PS2 system. (Or computer capable of emulation.)
I don't know why I have so many copies of Puzzle Fighter (various); I only play one of them.

There's plenty more where these come from. (I think I'm at the point where I'm going to give up trying to play them.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I always play every game I buy for about 10-15 minutes just to check it works ok, but here's a list of some I can think of that I've never really touched since then:

Flashback (Mega Drive)
Ecco the Dolphin (Mega Drive)
Phantasy Star II (Mega Drive)
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Saturn)
Tekken 3 (PS1)
Fear Effect (PS1)
Okami (PS2)
Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2)
ICO (PS2)
Persona 4 (PS2)
Dragon Quest The Journey of the Cursed King (PS2)
Beyond Good and Evil (Gamecube)
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (Gamecube)
Tech Romancer (Dreamcast)
Banjo Tooie (N64)
Lylat Wars/Starfox 64 (N64)

And there's probably more I can't think of too...

I probably have a couple, but how would I know they're great when I haven't played them?

Apparently if the general consensus is that they are great, then they are great until you can prove otherwise :?

But, like Schrodinger's Cat, we won't really know unless we open the box.

...

Actually, true-story, I opened a brand-new ordered-direct-from-the-publisher DVD after almost six months of being still in the sealed UPS box.... to find out it was empty. (I called customer service and, surprisingly, this was a common issue... I just happened to be really late.)

Or, depending on your interpretation of quantum physics, the game exists in a simultaneously great and non-great state until observation determines one state or the other.

Personally, I'll stick with the interpretation that I don't know until I play it. Plenty of mediocre games get high praise.

Or perhaps, because so many are observing it, the game itself becomes great. (It's not so much the Heisenberg Principle as it is the Train-Wreck-Gawker Theorem.)
