Ever tried fixing a YLOD yourself and how did it work out ?

I'm thinking of buying a heatgun and doing a fix myself on someone's PS3.

So yeah... Tips? Experiences? How long did it last? What to avoid?...

Lemme know folks...

My experiences doing it on a 360 weren't great FWIW. Did two different machines twice each. They'd work for a few weeks, then would crap out again. I did use flux as well to try and help the solder reconnect.

Dang, doesn't sound too promising then.

If I understand correctly you didn't just heat the GPU and CPU, but you went all the way and reballed the fuckers...

Maybe you used too much heat and the boards warped?...

EDIT. Just had a look on eBay. Those motherboard support jigs cost like an arm and a leg!... That's really taking advantage of the situation to ask so much for such a simple construction. More than 50 euro for a metal plate with a few pins on it!?... Preposterous!... And then there's this one: One day training course, only 235GBP. Thieves I tell you...

I've repaired two 360's from red ring. I was looking into fixing a friend's ps3, but I watched a guide on how to do it, and it looked like sheer hell. After reading CRTGAMER's experiences with having his ps3 repaired, I just said fuck it.

Well, I found the thread you mentioned -for those interested, you can find it here- and all I can say is: fuck it indeed. I won't even bother. If Sony can't fix them right, then neither can I. No need to waste my time on this...

i tried using a heat gun but i must of put too much heat because it warped my ps3 casing lol

All the PS3's I received back from Sony were factory repair exchange Fat 60gb with a PS2 Emotion Chip. All failed within warranty under 90 days except the last one which failed after hooking up a launch 360 in the same circuit.

You can see the debate on the last pages of how I suspected they all failed. I don't want to beat that dead horse again, agree to disagree and leave it at that. I finally gave up on the Fat and now have a Sony Factory Refurbished Slim 120gb. I'll post if it fails, I suspect it will last a lot longer then my previous PS3s.

In all honesty, I think you were just out of luck with your consoles. No need to look further than the console's construction on this one. Especially with a son that plays on it continuously for hours on end from what I understood. The board just can't take the heat, it warps, the CPU's connections with the motherboard break, you get the YLOD. Especially on already refurbished units. I mean, look at all the people that had multiple 360's dying on them. Some got a refurbished model and it RROD'd as soon as they got it back from Microsoft, out of the box. Both Sony and Microsoft deserve a slap in the face for launching their console too early and as flawed as they were. Both Slim models should've been the launch models to start with...

Nah, I don't have a machine. I was just using a heat gun. But I did load it up so that the space between the chip and the board was filled with flux. I then heated it until the flux was boiling out, then after it had cooled for hours I spend a long time flushing the leftover flux remains out with alcohol, then a bit with contact cleaner. So my investment was $30 for a heat gun and flux that I can use for other things and half a bottle of drug store alcohol. Was cheaper than paying someone with a machine to properly reball, but didn't work out. My machine went back to RROD, my friend's kept going back to no video.

Things may vary with a PS3, just my input that a heat gun fix, even with flux to help didn't last long on 2 360s.
