And for that game list I didn't name all of the good gamecube games because i was too lazy too. But competing with the Ps2 was difficult but HOW COULD ANYONE choose an XBOX over the Gamecube back in the day. I only had the gamecube during last generation and it was awesome! The pad sucks for fighters MINUS Soulcalibur II and Melee and it's perfect for Zelda.

There was a point in time when it was 99$ and came with the Zeldas Collectors Edition.

Talk about value! Oh and I might be able to buy Pikmin 1 and Phantasy Star Online EP 1+2 for 25 soon as well is that a good deal?
Xbox had great graphics, dvd player, good online multiplayer options, built in hard drive, xbox live was awesome.

I am a fan of sports games and play in simulation style online leagues, and that was the best console for them. It also had halo, KoTOR, Jade Empire, kingdom under fire series, oddworld. A bunch of multiplatform releases where the xbox version was superior graphics wise. I know I am forgetting several more.

I think this is an unfortunate state of affairs. Even with Sony its all about how much money we can throw at this thing. I think its all too obvious that the PS3 and to a lesser degree the PS2 was designed to push a media that was going to make money across the Sony empire. With these two giants, who have proven they're willing to just hemorrhage money into their game systems, how can a video games only company like Sega, or Nintendo ever start again? I think Nintendo can stay in the market, but could a company like Nintendo or Sega ever get into the market now? I don't think so. No without some crash that forces Sony or MS to leave.

Not all that different from any number of markets these days. You'd have a hard time starting a car company from scratch, or a CPU company, etc.

It's hardly fair to make Nintendo out to be a little guy either...or assume they wouldn't muscle out an upstart company.

That said, a follow-up question would be why a company would want to create their own console at this stage of things. We're seeing far more general purpose computing devices wiggle their way into people's lives, most of which can play games. Even the consoles we have are branching out to do more, like stream video, browse the web, do voice chat, etc. MS, and certainly Sony are going for a living room media center. Nintendo as well really.

Realistically, we are seeing new "consoles" emerge. OnLive (and the eventual Gamestop competitor). The Apple App store, Android Market, and so on. They just aren't taking the form of traditional consoles, because that's not where the industry is at any longer.

Was the Xbox or PS2 better than the GC? Who knows... it's open to debate depending on what you like and what you expect from a console.

Did the GameCube suck? No! It's a great console with great games. Personally it's my favorite console of its generation.

I think we have to view consoles like we do cars. What do we need and what do we want from it. There's different things for different people.
Thanks everyone...

Which was (and still is to a degree) the best reason to buy one IMHO.

Oh the industry is still there, that's just not where a lot of new growth is.

One of the biggest things I've always liked about the GC is the LOADING TIMES! They're barely there in most games, especially exclusives. And even where there are loading screens it's nothing compared to what you have to put up with on the PS2.

I hadn't really thought about it much for awhile because I don't even play PS2 games often. Then I bought the PS2 version of Killer7 and I couldn't even play it because the loading times completely break the flow of the game.

I'm not a fan of the D-pad sized for a 6 year old, nor the 'oh crap we nearly forgot about it' placement of the Z button.

However even though there aren't nearly as many games on the GC that I actually want to play, I don't think it is a bad system.

The controller is infuriating to use with the gameboy player. The d pad is either too small and the analog stick is inaccurate(life long d-pad user for 2d games). The way the buttons are laid out is irritating in that it goes away from the conventional home button i.e. the x button for the PS, a button for xbox, b buttons for the snes etc

And that is the reason I want to get an original Xbox :D

I don't think the GameCube sucks at all. I remember wanting to get one when it was newish (probably around the Platnium Zelda bundles started showing up for 100 bucks) and my parents saying no because I had a PS2. Joke's on them because now I have one, plus like 10 other systems.
