Original_Name wrote:Jeez, I'm not used to seeing the Dreamcast get slagged in this corner of the internet, but it seems like I see more and more complaints about it lately. People talking about feeling like it gets shoved down their throats in the retro community is understandable, but you guys have to realize that only a couple of years ago it was a solid pick for "most underrated console ever" (I still would have given that honor to the Sega Saturn or PC-Engine even back then, though). Plus I think its often taken out of context amongst people who posthumously got into the console -- the console only had a two-year commercial lifespan, folks. The console may not be for you, but objectively-speaking, I don't think anyone could think of a better two-year-run on any other console. For all the "shallow" games, there are plenty of lasting, intricate experiences. The Dreamcast also has a knack for fitting the conceptual scope of more indulgent games into the brevity of arcade action titles, which is fascinating to look at if you're interested in conceptual design in games.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS, NOISE! You're saying you're getting into it mostly for shmups and homebrew, but there are a ton of Dreamcast games I think everyone should try, regardless of personal taste. Rez, Shenmue, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Set Radio, Samba de Amigo, Cosmic Smash, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, The Typing of the Dead, Power Stone 2, and Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future are all fantastic games, although you may not be into all of them, there's so much variety there that the ones that grab you will really grab you. Unsung classics like Toy Commander and Lack of Love are great to keep an eye out for. You've got to develop an appreciation for the strange, but you'll be fascinated by how fun a game like Sega Marine Fishing, for instance, can be if you throw your inhibitions away. Once I've become good enough at Japanese, I can't wait to sink my teeth into the likes of Segagaga, Rent-a-Hero, Roommania, and Sakura Taisen 3.

The only fault I can find with the Dreamcast is that so many of its best games ended up getting converted into exclusives for other titles during Sega's shift to third-party. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Virtua Fighter 4, Super Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio Future, GunValkyrie, The House of the Dead 3, and Shinobi all have their rightful home on the Dreamcast. Plus planned Dreamcast games like Air NiGHTS, Shining Force IV, and Thunder Force VI all ended up being changed beyond recognition during their convoluted development histories. That is to say that people who find the library small have no one to blame but themselves for not keeping the Dreamcast afloat longer. :P
Congratulations for making one hell of a great post man, seriously, the haters just don't understand or are just too blind to care bro.

The Dreamcast is chock full of quirky and truly bizarrely unique games, but that is what makes it all the more of a cult classic than any other system on this planet. It also had more Arcade perfect ports than any other system of the last gen! It's an ADHD gamers Paradise!

Let me also remind you other fanboys of other systems, we give the Dreamcast so much love, most likely more love than fanboys of other systems ever even thought about giving. The Homebrew and Indie scene is more alive now than ever, what, with our newly developed SD card adapters, recently updated in 2011 emulators and Half-Life PC mod ports!

I mean, what other "Dead" system gets retail games each consecutive year for it? None! Albeit they are not going to be sold in retail stores, but online the Dreamcast takes a life all its own. The Dreamcast has gotten retail games for it every year since 1998, and not one single year has past where a new game wasn't sold for it. Hell, Sega themselves even supported it up until 2007 in Japan! It might have "died" abroad to the casual gamer, but to the truly hardcore gamers in the know, they get the most joy out of it, and for those that love the Dreamcast, they REALLY love it! The Dreamcast even was the first HD system with its 480P VGA box resolution, official Mouse and Keyboard and Anti-Alasing making it stand far and above even the WII today!

The Dreamcast didn't let the world down, the world let the Dreamcast down.

Man, backup games nowadays on CD even have file folder order on the discs to load more silent, and are optimized more-so than the original GDR games are to load much more faster in many cases.

I have been burning games to mine for YEARS now and the thing is still kicking strong, its a February 2000 model too, and I have had no problems with it at all.

My mom even accidentally turned on my system when she sat it in a box, and the thing was on running for 3 weeks straight, no lie, and it was still kicking ass 3 years afterwards to this very day!

The Dreamcast is a sturdy system, more-so than the Xbox 360, you have nothing to worry about with burning games, no the laser will not kill over by playing backups, it is just not like that.

though I won't have my DC until next week, I figure I'll start mentioning the games I'm most interested in...

Typing of the Dead - is a dream come true for me. It was always the #1 game on my "why isn't it on a system I own?!?!?!?!" list. I love HotD. I can type really fast. It's weird. I'm thrilled.

Castle Shikigami 2 - sure I've owned it for GCN and still own it for PS2, but the DC version came with a soundrack. So I'd want that. Probably crazy expensive though. I haven't looked into it yet.

Seaman - looks crazy weird.

Segagaga - if the translation is ever completed.

Beats of Rage - seems to be the biggest sub-section of DC homebrew. The mods I'm really interested in are The Simpsons Arcade Game because I've long been devastated that it never got a console port. The BOR mod looks fantastic and if it plays even close to as well as the arcade game, I'll be thrilled. Splatterhouse Trilogy because I'm a huge Splatter-fan. So a remake/re-imagining sounds fun. Kill Bill Vol 1 might suck, who knows. But still. It's a Kill Bill game. I need to play it.

Gunbird 2 - already ordered it. I love Gunbird.

Cannon Spike - looks awesome.

Project Justice should be one of your first fighters. It plays great and has a very unique twist about it. Its also a Dreamcast exclusive, not counting the arcade machine. I'd also suggest Capcom vs SNK 2, since it plays great on the DC, but it's not exactly worth it if you already have another version of it. They all look and play the same.

Cannon Spike: It is a Capcom arcade style top-down shooter that you'll be spending a nice amount of time on. Despite the lack of two joysticks, the control scheme manages to be completely usable and easy. Many bullet hell patterns to dodge and shit to go boom. At least 10 levels, might be 11... It's been a bit.

The unreleased and leaked Half-Life with its brigade of engine mods are loads of fun. Once you get used to the extremely awkward ABXY as your "moving around" d-pad and the joystick as your aiming thing. It gets real fun. People will try to talk you out of playing it since the PC version has better controls, but hey, at least it only costs the price of a blank CD.

Power Stone: Top-down capcom brawler with a lovely cartoony style. It WAS a cool DC exclusive until Mister PSP came in and had to be all Porty McPorterson.

Ikaruga: Duh. Also, Border Down is a wonderful DC exclusive shmup. Castle Shikigami 2 (which I recall you loving) has a splediferous DC version.

Hydro Thunder: Coming from a fan who has indeed played every version (including the one on GameCube via a Midway Arcade compilation) the Dreamcast hosts the best version. 13 well designed tracks and a vast assortment of racing boats make for what I think is Midway's best arcade racer ever. Very challenging and very fun to master. Only downside is absolutely no soundtrack during the racing, so turn up the Pantera and enjoy.

Space Channel 5: I like to say its a rythem based Metal Gear Solid game with gogo dancers and ray guns.

Also, if you are to burn games, dont feel like you have to worry about the laser. Unless you play unoptimized bad dumps that make your Dreamcast louder than your tv can go for 12 hours a day, then you have little to worry about. I hear overburning helps loading times. Since you would probably only burn games for things like Half-Life, hombrew, emus etc. (not your entire collection like I do) then you practically have nothing to worry about.

never heard of it. I'll check it out.

this does look interesting... and since there's no chance I'll play it on PC, I'm sure I'll try the DC version. How does it compare to the PS2 version?

would certainly pick up the DC port of Ikaruga (and Chaos Field) if I found them at prices I could afford. (which right now = $0). Never head of Border Down. Will look into!

yeah for the most part, anything I'd burn I'd look for an optimized version first.

badass!

I've actually thought we should try to setup a Southcoast NE Racketboy meetup sometime. But I have no idea when I'd really have the time to do that. Someday, bud!

Tux The Wise has fantastic releases. His version of THPS is supposedly better then the commercially released one. And oh yeah, the Tony Hawks Pro Skater series is damn good too. theisozone.com also hosts some great releases, some of which are Tux's, along with self boot versions of great homebrew titels and every BOR mod immaginable.

They both look the same in terms of graphics as far as I can tell, but the PS2 version has a second thumbstick and not nearly as many loading times.

yeah I've read about Tux's releases. He is amazing. It's funny, because of this site I've pretty much kept up with the DC homebrew scene for the past 2 years even though I didn't play any of the games or own a DC.

I already own all the THPS on PS1/2, but I might try Tux's version of 1. As it happens, THPS was the one DC game that I was obsessed with. It was my roommate's in college and we played it so much. But when we moved, he took his DC and I owned a PS2, so I just bought the PS1 version instead.

PS2 version has slightly different models. Whilst they have a tiny bit more polygons, the Dreamcast version has the highest quality textures, and the Dreamcast version still has better models than the original PC version. In fact, Gearbox Software redid everything to make it shine on the DC.

Also, it should be noted, that the Dreamcast has HD video output with the VGA box, and every single 3D game on the system has Anti-Aliasing, which smooths out the jaggies for a truly stunning look. This is especially nice if you have a HD TV.

While some talk down about using the face buttons to move and strafe, it is no different than using the WASD keys on a Keyboard for FPS games, no different at all.

If you enjoyed Goldeneye 007 on N64, or basically any old FPS on the PSX or Saturn or PSP, then you should be right at home with this. After all, the analog stic is used for what is most important, and that is for aiming.

Although, you can use the official Sega Mouse and Keyboard for precision control, and you can always reconfigure the controls to you liking with the control pad if the default control scheme doesn't suit you.

When you receive your system, make a post over at isozone and I'll set you up with all the necessities to get you started and get you the best of my top 10 games, mods, emulators or homebrew titles.

Another thing to think about getting is at least 3 VMU's and a decent Madkatz rumble pack like CRT recommended, its the same kind I got, and the light is nice when it rumbles in the dark.
