The reason people say the Gamecube sucks is because they are comparing it to the PS2. Games aside, the Gamecube pretty much destroys the PS2 in every way. But since games are the most important thing, the PS2 wins by a mile. It has many hundreds of excellent games, while the Gamecube only has a few dozen.

I think the Gamecube is good but it's probably the worst Nintendo platform, game library wise. Famicom, SuuFami, N64, and even the Wii have more good games than the Gamecube, imo.

Don't get the wrong idea. Just because I rank the Gamecube so low, doesn't mean it's bad. It has some really excellent games, like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Sumabura DX, PSO Ep I & II, Zelda: Kaze no Tact and Twilight Princess, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, etc. It's also the best way to play all generations of Game Boy games.

Now, if we compare the Gamecube to something like the Xbox, it blows the Xbox out of the water, since that thing only has a small handful of good games.

tl;dr

If you look at the Gamecube by itself, it is extremely awesome. If you compare it to most other popular systems, it doesn't seem quite as good.

Everything's opinion I guess so I might as well fully explain my opinion.

I've always had the major consoles, every one I would consider major. And, I bought them when it came out. Atari 2600, NES, SMS, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, N64, PSX, DC, GCN, PS2, oXBOX, Wii, PS3, and XBOX 360. Since the N64, Nintendo consoles that I own only get some love when it comes to a few select first-party titles, otherwise they sit and gather dust. I've not liked any of the controllers since N64 for Nintendo, it always seems like you have to design a game around it, rather than just using it as a tool to get a game done. It's great when it works and is horrible when it doesn't, there's not really any middle ground.

Graphically it seems like Ninentdo is always behind. Why would you ever buy a game on a Nintendo console that came out for another? I wouldn't. Which just further limits the library. I liked Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube, but most of the time I was wishing it was released on the Xbox or PS2.

This is pretty much exactly how I see it. The amount of great games for PS2 is unbelievable really. I would still rank the GC above the Wii and N64 though, personally.

1. No online play (for 98% of the games)
2. Bad 3rd party support, meaning it missed out on many multiplat games. The lack of most Lucas Arts games was an especially large void.
3. Not as many RPGs as the PS2
4. Not as many "mature" games as the Xbox and PS2
5. Crappy controller

Most of those points can be ignored, as it has plenty of good games anyhow. However, I do agree with 2 and 5 myself, and as such, the GCN is my least favorite of the PS2/Xbox/GCN era of consoles. It has a smaller number of games I'm interested in than the Xbox and PS2 do, and the controller layout has always bugged me.
Don't you mean the PS2/Xbox/GCN/DREAMCAST era of consoles.

I'm not a fan of the D-pad sized for a 6 year old, nor the 'oh crap we nearly forgot about it' placement of the Z button.

However even though there aren't nearly as many games on the GC that I actually want to play, I don't think it is a bad system.

I think most of my bad attitude is rememberance based. I was extremely disappointed with the Gamecube when it came out.

What controller do I use for SNES emulation... and all emulation in general? The PS2 controller. 8)

Best design in my book. However I do definitely prefer the 360's design for FPS's. But other than that, the PSX dual joystick design still remains to be comfortable to use, practical, and works for me with both new and old games. Here's to hoping Sony never changes the design.

As far as the technical specs go, yes, the DC is part of the PS2 generation. But when you look at the games themselves, it seems more like part of the PS1/N64 generation, and that's what I consider it a part of.

When you look at the sheer number of DC ports that went to Xbox, PS2, and GCN it's got almost nothing in common with the previous gen but a couple of half assed Capcom games ported to the PSX.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
