Is the Sega CD worth collecting for?

Post by ATARI800XLfan »

Hello. I have had a Sega Nomad for awhile and I am wondering if it would be worth it to get a Sega Genesis and CD for some of the games I am interested in like Sonic CD and Terminator. What is a good price for one and what are some games people would recommend getting for it. Also which is more reliable the CD model 1 or two. Thanks for your time and if this is in the wrong area I apologize and could some one movie it if so. Thanks again.

EDIT: Also with the Genesis when you hook the sound up is it to the CD unit or the Genesis itself, seeing as the Sega CD mixes withe the Genesis soundchip. How about on the model one Genesis seeing as you have to hookup a mix cable, would the sound come out of the CD and video from the Genesis. The model 2 does have RCA right?

A lot of collectors really like the system. Me on the other hand, not so much.

And before I get flamed for it, yes, I did own one. I actually sold it because I wasn't getting much enjoyment out it.

The problem with it for me was that a number of the good games are quite pricey. And even the ones that aren't pricey aren't as fun to collect for. It's not easy finding Sega CD games in the wild, especially good ones. So you're usually eBaying them. And then to add to that a lot of the good games that are affordable are also available for either Sega Genesis or Sega Saturn. (What is the point of porting Genesis games to the Sega CD when you needed a Genesis to even play Sega CD games?)

Some of the best of the system have also since been ported to later systems. Like the Lunar games, Sonic CD, and Mortal Kombat.

But if you're a collector looking to complete the Sega Voltron, then I guess it's a must-have.

Well the Sega CD versions of those games are generally better. Even if it's just a case of things like better music.

Other than that I generally agree with what you're saying here. It's the main reason I sold mine: the good games are WAY too pricey. I don't see why you'd get flamed for that, it's true.

If you don't mind paying the premium, it does have a nice amount of decent games that actually didn't get ported. Popful Mail is pretty fun, as the first example that comes to mind. Plus it has the BEST versions of Final Fight and Earthworm Jim. Final Fight CD is actually BETTER than its arcade counterpart. And there's the aforementioned genesis ports, most of which are pretty much the definitive versions of their respective games.

If you're a fan of the Genesis and find a good deal on a Sega CD, I'd say nab one anyway. It's certainly got a lot more to offer than say, the 32x, and I'd say it's got at LEAST as many worthwhile games as the SMS, probably more. Just don't expect to get a lot of games for it very quickly. Hell I might buy another one sometime myself.

It's worth owning. Some of the best stuff can't be found on other systems, such as Panic! and Popful Mail. It's also got the best version of The Terminator and Earthworm Jim.

Terminator and AVG is one of the first places I had heard of the Sega CD, music for Terminator seems great, just a bit better then the NES version right?

good list, surprisingly most of those games are on ebay for less then 20 dollars plus I have a few vintage games stores where I live, so that should help too. Usually have good prices, I know they have comix Zone complete in box for 8 bucks for example.

Any system is worth collecting for if the price is right. Snatcher, Robo Aleste (voice acting blows), Sonic CD, Lunar, Rise of the Dragon are just a few titles worth owning, imho.

It's worth noting if you can't afford the games, it's still just awesome to have the system and there's no copyright protection on the games. So burn away and play on the real hardware. 8)
