they pay fair. Especially if your items are complete.

I went through all my stuff, made a list of stuff I was trading in and picked out the PS3. I had to pay $80 when all was said and done. They mailed me the PS3 first. I unpacked it, tested it, and then put all the stuff in the box that I was sending back to them. They sent me a UPS label to print (they paid for shipping back) and all I had to do was drop the box off at the UPS store. So easy.

WHILE they're waiting for your stuff they put a hold on your credit card for that amount of money. They don't charge it, but they need it to be sure you don't stiff them. If you don't want to do that, no problem -- you just have to mail the stuff to them BEFORE they mail to you.

I notice that the used is out of stock I put myself on the waiting/notification list. Did you have to wait or was it in stock?

For what its worth - with the downloading and modifications people are doing pretty much out of the box on current gen consoles - I still say buy them new, unless they are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper used. You just really don't know what your getting unless you buy from someone you know - and as we all know, good condition to one person is shit condition to you and I.

I've seen more PS3's die in 4 years than PS1's die in 15 years. People today are used to just jamming discs in and out and simply don't take care of stuff like we used to imo.

Yeah... well yeah on Monday.
The new price is $250 the used is $175-220... so I may wait for a used one so I don't trade too many games, unless there is an advantage to buying new.

Do the used come w/boxes - papers? If they don't - just think what a box/instructions does for an older console currently? Easily worth $25-50 when you go to resell.

I don't know the answer to that question... but it did echo what you said earlier and reminded me that not too many current consoles give me faith that they will be working to resell when they are considered "older".

Man, I hate these decisions. Part of me thinks if I have to try to wheel and deal this much I should just wait until I can comfortably afford one with cash... when my kids move out of the house.

Wii: No problems, and it's in your price range.
360: Don't you dare, unless it's a slim. All non-slims WILL die on you one day, most likely soon.
PS3: This is the best choice, but you'll need to find a slim if you want reliability. With the recent price drop, you should be able to get a slim used for $200 or less I think.

A risk of buying used
The problem with buying used is if the owner took care of it. Was the console well ventilated, ports cleared of dust and not plugged into a cheap extension cord? Are the game discs in good shape without scratches as not to put undo wear on the internal tracking of the reader?

I would ask an owner to have a console turned on before I got there and then show up half hour late before a sale. That way you know at least its fully warmed up and still running. A test run of a music CD as well as the game disc on the PS3 and 360 will help to show the durability of the reader.
