Videogame heroes you have admired

Post by J T »

I don't think of most video game heroes as being very good role models, but every once and awhile I find one I admire.

When I was a kid, I thought Ryu Hayabusa of the Ninja Gaiden series was a noble and respectable guy with a big heart. I appreciated his allegiance to his family in his relentless pursuit to follow out his father's dying wishes and to figure out who murdered him, and I appreciated his love for Irene that was his real reward for all his fighting. He was this great warrior that was above all of the violence and really cared about people. I think the story is a tad cheesy now as an adult, but when I was a kid there was no hero with more honor and integrity than Ryu.

Who are some of the most admirable game characters in your eyes?

Samus Aran - a perfect example of stoicism. I don't usually think of video game characters as having the necessary depth to be 'admirable' but Samus has always really hit a special spot with me. She's a little tragic and she almost seems to seek death - but always for the good of galactic civilization.

Each of her games leaves you, the gamer, nearly powerless at first. As you wander you become more and more powerful, nearly Godlike at the end. I've always thought her journey's were great metaphors for the value of perseverance and courage.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Amaterasu - She basically spends the whole game (Okami) fixing EVERYTHING and helping EVERYONE. Feeding hungry animals, restoring nature, defeating demons, fixing people's problems, etc. She's the ultimate good Samaritan and all those good deeds pay off later in the story

As a small child, I always liked Crash Bandicoot. I never exactly lived up to any video game character, but Crash was fer sure my favorite. Then I got into the Metroid games and thought Samus was the ultimate badass.

Currently, I respect Terry Bogard as a true american, and Chell as the most badass woman ever. She... Oh wait. I can't tell you cause it'd spoil the amazing plotline. Chell is awesome.

Link and Cecil Harvey (once he grew a pair). Also, Samus Aran, who kicks ass and takes names. But that may be because I'm going through Metroid Prime right now (for the first time, too!).

Link. Silent, deadly, gets shit done, and helps everybody. He's the first game character I actually thought had a good personality, even if there really isn't one...

Link from OoT and MM, because the interaction with other characters is amazing. Especially in MM, so many characters to trigger something, and it shows you how kind and helpful Link can be to everyone he comes across.
