Can anyone tell us about the .hack games?

Hey now, just saying they didn't inspire my roommate to keep buying them and the little bit I watched didn't tempt me to play them even though I liked the anime series.

.hack is pretty unique for being an offline "MMO". I'd like to play them someday. I've seen a friend play the first one and it looked pretty cool.

offline MMO sounds interesting to me, at least to try.

I played the first game in the original four part series. I enjoyed the concept but wasn't blown away by the experience.
