How to play wii imports ?

Post by winds »

Hey guys,
So I ordered a copy of xenoblade chronicles and it should be here sometime next week. I live in Canada and have an unmodified ntsc wii. Is there anyway I can play xenoblade without modifying my system? Is there some sort of software I can buy to play imports, or some trick I can use?
Cheers!

W/O modifying your system? No.
Your option for that route is to buy a PAL Wii and use your Canadian power supply so you don't need to buy a power converter. I'm not sure if the video signal will switch automatically from PAL to NTSC on a stock Wii but there might be info on the web for that. But even if it does auto-switch, you're going to have to buy another system just to play one game without hacking your Wii. (I wouldn't go that route.)

There is the FreeLoader disc that used to work but IIRC doesn't work on games with OS updates on it and past a certain OS version (it's basically a worthless disc from about 2 or so years ago).

Either way, softmodding it is very easy and there are various levels of a softmod. The Lifehacker one is a bare minimum and there are many more that are very thorough like protecting you from Nintendo updates that can remove your region-free capabilities etc and every level in between. It just depends on what you ultimately want to do with your Wii and to what degree you want to hack it. (Originally I just had the Homebrew Channel because all I wanted was emulators and that's all it required.)

Yeah that's not a very safe guide IMO. Did you back up your NAND before installing custom IOS' on your Wii????

Well since it seems you didn't, if something does happen to your Wii later on, your likely only way out of a brick is now gone.

In my opinion, this is the best, safest, and most complete guide I've come across. They need to update it to recommend cIOS D2X instead of Waninkoko's older stuff, but it's otherwise flawless.
