List of Pre-NES Release Dates

Post by o.pwuaioc »

Anyone know where I can find release dates for older pre-NES games? Wikipedia, IMDB, and even books like The Ultimate History of Video Games don't have exact dates for many games...

because there wasn't really a such thing back then. In those days video games were considered "toys," so they didn't track release dates. All you can really go by is rough estimates based on when games seemed to find themselves into various stores' inventories or sales records. It's kind of a guessing game.

Even a "this-before-that" timeline would be helpful.

One good example is Akalabeth, which was the predecessor to Ultima. No one is even sure what year it came out in, because of how low key the release was. Richard Garriot copied his own discs and sold them to stores.

I'm determined to get to the bottom of this. I don't even know if Ms. Pac-Man preceded Donkey Kong. How can a historian accurately reconstruct the development and growth of video/computer games in the late-70s and early-80s if no one knows release dates for even major releases (not saying that Ms. Pac-Man has an unknown release date, but I've yet to find it).

This is an interesting topic. Not interesting enough for me to do further research into, but interesting enough for me to click on this again to see if anyone else does.

At least I'm not alone! If this has enough people interested in it, I can continue to update it every so often. And anyone else doing research could keep us in the loop too!
