Games for visually challanged people?

Post by jay_red »

Hey guys, hoping you can help me out here with some suggestions. So my Fiance's dad has a rare eye condition that renders him legally blind. He can still see to an extent, but as an example to see text on a computer screen he needs to be about 2 inches away. He is also a very tech savvy guy, spending a lot of time keeping up to date on the latest computer hardware.

We have finished building him just about the most badass computer you can get. Core i7 990 extreme, Sabertooth x58 motherboard, 24 gigs of ddr3 ram (yes you read that right) 1 sata 3 SSD, 1 sata 2 SSD, 2 10,000 rpm raptor HDD's. 1200 watt PSU, all put into one of the nicest cases I have ever seen. I know you are going to say its overkill, and yes it is, but he had to sell his boat and wanted to spend his money on something.

So he has this badass computer that will only browse the web, check email, and transfer old tapes to DVD. I want to see if there are any games for the PC that are slower paced where he could take the time to see whats going on and enjoy. I was thinking possibly an RTS or something, but I am not a fan of those types of games, so I dont know too much about them. Something turn based would be ideal also, so he could take his time.

Thanks in advance guys, I am really hoping i can make something happen so he can have a bit of enjoyment out of his drool worthy machine.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of many games that a visually challenged person could enjoy. This site can almost certainly help you, though: http://www.ablegamers.com/

A friend of mine who recently built a top-notch gaming PC showed me Shogun 2 - I was left in awe, to say the least. Both the visuals (on a grand scale) and audio are just superb!

As was suggested above, the Able Gamers are an amazing resource for people with any kind of disability ranging from colorblindness to being quadriplegic and almost any other disability there is. Their forums have a lot of helpful people, and the guys who run the site are class acts. Take a trip over there and you won't be disappointed.

I don't get why someone nearly blind needs to have a PC like that. If he is incapable of playing new PC games that are running at a very high resolutions, then it's just a big waste of money.

Anyway, I have some suggestions.

If he can only see 2 inches from his face, maybe portables can work for him? He could put the tiny screen close to his face and might be able to see everything.

The Rhythm Tengoku series is mostly playable without needing to see anything. I've been playing the new one on the Wii and I could imagine a blind person playing it. It wouldn't even be that hard to learn how to play.

I can't believe you didn't suggest the DSi LL/XL, the resolution is tiny but the screens are huge so he would probably be able to see everything.

Advance Wars on a GBA may work for his portable gaming.
