Technically, it's about 21 years old if you count the SFC.
So, the first time I'd ever seen an SNES was I think in early 1991. Of course, it wasn't really an SNES. It was a Super Famicom. One of the local rental shops had gotten a few Super Famicoms with a few games. They had a display system you could play, and actually had some to rent. Holy crap! Yeah, I rented one.
I had to wait a while (weeks or months?) until one was available, but when there was one, I remember renting it with Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 (why'd they drop the SMB4 from the name?) and Final Fight. Both blew my mind, although I was disappointed at Final Fight only being one player.
Later that year, when the SNES finally came out, the first time I remember seeing one in person was in a Target store in northern Minnesota. It had SMW running on it. I then saw another in a different store in Winnipeg, and saw Pilotwings for the first time running. WOW! It sure looked better in action than the screen shots led on!!!
As I was in elementary school at the time, most of my friends still had just their NES. A few had an SMS or Genesis (lucky ones!), and one guy I knew had a Turbo. It wasn't until Christmas that a few friends got one. I was SURE I would get one for Christmas, but... alas, it was not to be. I did get a lot of NES stuff, which was cool, but I really was looking forward to getting into SMW. I spend a fair bit of time at friend's houses who had a Super Nintendo. Within a few months, I had actually finished all 96 exits on SMW on a friend's system. That involved a lot of sleep overs! Me at his house, or he'd be at mine and bring his SNES. I also managed to clock a lot of time with F-Zero and Pilotwings and Final Fantasy II this way.
Meanwhile, I had been saving up money I made from a paper route I had. By summer 1992, I had enough money to pick up a new system. The SNES was definitely in my sights... but, while I had been renting the SFC, SNES and playing the hell out of my friends SNESs, I was absolutely addicted to another console; the Sega Genesis. I was enjoying the heck out of NHL Hockey, Mario Lemieux Hockey, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mickey Mouse in Castle of Illusion, Road Rash (also Road Rash II had JUST come out) and Evander Holyfield Boxing. It was a touch choice, but I went to Wal-Mart (although it wasn't Wal-Mart at the time), and came home with a Genesis with Sonic 1, Sonic 2 (a free coupon for it came with the system), Evander Holyfield Boxing and NHL Hockey.
Sometimes I regretted my decision, as I would miss out on games like Zelda III, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy II and III, Chrono Trigger, etc, but sometimes I was really happy with my Genesis. I just loved the main Sonic games, and I had some other great games like Phantasy Star II, IV, Shining Force I and II, and the Sega CD add-on (got for Christmas 1993) with games like Sonic CD, the Lunar games, Silpheed and NHL '94 (can you tell I like hockey?). The Genesis and SNES were pretty much equal in my books. I often traded my Genesis/Sega CD system for an SNES for weekends with various friends. It was easy, as pretty much everyone was jealous that I had a Sega CD.
It wouldn't be until 1997 when I finally got my own SNES. One of my friends got a Playstation for Final Fantasy VII, and decided he was never going to play his SNES again. He just GAVE it to me. SWEET!!! He had both FF games, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound (with strategy guide), F-Zero, SFII, SFII: Turbo, Pilotwings, Mario Kart, SMW, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Zelda III, DKC and Ogre Battle (yes, seriously....). As I hadn't had a chance to get into FFIII much yet, I basically spend the summer having a great time with Final Fantasy VI. I actually had a PS1 then... but, I barely touched it that summer. I definitely preferred FFVI (errr.... III) to FFVII, even when FFVII was new. The polygon graphics just threw me off... except in racing and fighting games. I welcomed VF, Tekken, TNFS, Daytona USA and Ridge Racer with open arms. As far as RPGs were concerned, Final Fantasy VI, PSIV and Lunar were the absolute pinnacle of the genre.
An such was my early experiences with the SNES; one of the greatest consoles ever made.
