Yay, to something lists! I'll make this 20:

My list of the first 20 SNES/SFC games that I think of (that I probably also really enjoy playing):

1. Parodius Da!
2. Gokujo Parodius
3. Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius
4. Gradius III
5. R-Type III
6. Super R-Type
7. UN Squardron
8. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
9. Actraiser
10. Super Castlevania IV
11. Castlevania: Dracula XX (ummm... I like to mix up JP and US names...)
12. Mega Man X
13. Top Gear 2
14. Super Mario World
15. Zelda III: LttP
16. Pilotwings
17. F-Zero
18. Street Fighter II: Turbo
19. Super Aleste
20. Donkey Kong Country 3

Technically, it's about 21 years old if you count the SFC.

So, the first time I'd ever seen an SNES was I think in early 1991. Of course, it wasn't really an SNES. It was a Super Famicom. One of the local rental shops had gotten a few Super Famicoms with a few games. They had a display system you could play, and actually had some to rent. Holy crap! Yeah, I rented one.

I had to wait a while (weeks or months?) until one was available, but when there was one, I remember renting it with Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 (why'd they drop the SMB4 from the name?) and Final Fight. Both blew my mind, although I was disappointed at Final Fight only being one player.

Later that year, when the SNES finally came out, the first time I remember seeing one in person was in a Target store in northern Minnesota. It had SMW running on it. I then saw another in a different store in Winnipeg, and saw Pilotwings for the first time running. WOW! It sure looked better in action than the screen shots led on!!!

As I was in elementary school at the time, most of my friends still had just their NES. A few had an SMS or Genesis (lucky ones!), and one guy I knew had a Turbo. It wasn't until Christmas that a few friends got one. I was SURE I would get one for Christmas, but... alas, it was not to be. I did get a lot of NES stuff, which was cool, but I really was looking forward to getting into SMW. I spend a fair bit of time at friend's houses who had a Super Nintendo. Within a few months, I had actually finished all 96 exits on SMW on a friend's system. That involved a lot of sleep overs! Me at his house, or he'd be at mine and bring his SNES. I also managed to clock a lot of time with F-Zero and Pilotwings and Final Fantasy II this way.

Meanwhile, I had been saving up money I made from a paper route I had. By summer 1992, I had enough money to pick up a new system. The SNES was definitely in my sights... but, while I had been renting the SFC, SNES and playing the hell out of my friends SNESs, I was absolutely addicted to another console; the Sega Genesis. I was enjoying the heck out of NHL Hockey, Mario Lemieux Hockey, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mickey Mouse in Castle of Illusion, Road Rash (also Road Rash II had JUST come out) and Evander Holyfield Boxing. It was a touch choice, but I went to Wal-Mart (although it wasn't Wal-Mart at the time), and came home with a Genesis with Sonic 1, Sonic 2 (a free coupon for it came with the system), Evander Holyfield Boxing and NHL Hockey.

Sometimes I regretted my decision, as I would miss out on games like Zelda III, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy II and III, Chrono Trigger, etc, but sometimes I was really happy with my Genesis. I just loved the main Sonic games, and I had some other great games like Phantasy Star II, IV, Shining Force I and II, and the Sega CD add-on (got for Christmas 1993) with games like Sonic CD, the Lunar games, Silpheed and NHL '94 (can you tell I like hockey?). The Genesis and SNES were pretty much equal in my books. I often traded my Genesis/Sega CD system for an SNES for weekends with various friends. It was easy, as pretty much everyone was jealous that I had a Sega CD. :P In this way, I actually got to play a lot of the best SNES games (Zelda III, FFII, SMW, etc.).

It wouldn't be until 1997 when I finally got my own SNES. One of my friends got a Playstation for Final Fantasy VII, and decided he was never going to play his SNES again. He just GAVE it to me. SWEET!!! He had both FF games, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound (with strategy guide), F-Zero, SFII, SFII: Turbo, Pilotwings, Mario Kart, SMW, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Zelda III, DKC and Ogre Battle (yes, seriously....). As I hadn't had a chance to get into FFIII much yet, I basically spend the summer having a great time with Final Fantasy VI. I actually had a PS1 then... but, I barely touched it that summer. I definitely preferred FFVI (errr.... III) to FFVII, even when FFVII was new. The polygon graphics just threw me off... except in racing and fighting games. I welcomed VF, Tekken, TNFS, Daytona USA and Ridge Racer with open arms. As far as RPGs were concerned, Final Fantasy VI, PSIV and Lunar were the absolute pinnacle of the genre.

An such was my early experiences with the SNES; one of the greatest consoles ever made.

Talk to me in five years. :P
Oh, what adventures you'll experience! You'll have a blast with it. Try the first party games for sure: Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, etc. Most Capcom and Konami games on the SNES are incredible as well. And a lot of JRPG fans say some of the best of the genre are on the system. But personally, I'm not a JRPG fan so I'm not speaking from personal experience on that point.

I was a bit late to the SNES party. I picked one up randomly at a garage sale around seventh grade (~2001/2002). For 30 bucks I got the system and 25 games, many of which were essentials for the system. Around then is when I really started getting into retro gaming and collecting since most titles were still affordable for a kid with $10 a week in allowance. It was the first system I had purchased with my own money as well, up until that point I had either borrowed my uncle's consoles or they were bought by my parents. Tons of fun stuff on that system. I have fond memories of playing through several games on my 15" black and white TV. From what I remember, Bust a Move was quite difficult to play :P.

Some Favorites of mine are:

Darius Twin
Bust A Move
Street Fighter II: Turbo
Super R-Type
Tetris Attack
Super Mario World
Zombies ate my Neighbors
Gradius III
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario Kart
Fzero
Starfox

I think I might have to have some friends over on Tuesday to celebrate. Any time I can have an excuse to have people over and play some retro games, I'll take advantage of it ^_^.

this is a write up I did some time ago...seems relevant to this thread: http://www.rfgeneration.com/blogs/dshei ... h-1485.php

I had a Genesis when this system was current, so my list of faves is pretty small. I'd count Chrono Trigger, Mario World 1&2, Link to the Past, Killer Instinct, and Donkey Kong Country as the ones I've played the most over the years.

Sounds good, well I'm 24 years old now so when the SNES came along, I was just a little kid that could barely remember anything. I do remember classic games such as the original Street Fighter II as well as Super Mario World, but I believe during this time I was still hooked on the NES playing MegaMan and SunSoft's ripoff of MegaMan which was Batman and his 2D platformer shooting game (lol)

I believe the game that finally won me over for the SNES was Mortal Kombat II, that's when I made my serious transition to the SNES because to me, it felt like I was playing that expensive 50 cent game at the arcade ( reminder, I was like 6-7 so during this time, it was considered a crime to charge 50 cents a game than 25 cents, which I find funny because now every game if you attempt to find an arcade will charge 50 cents for every game..lol)

and it was the greatest thing in the world to see a Fatality working, especially when they came out of pure luck. My Grandma absolutely hated this game, but I still played it anyways behind her back (I believe the only game that she hated worse than this one was Diablo, but they're pretty close neck & neck)

Another memory was Yoshi's Island at Sears, i thought this game would never go on sale! I kept waiting and waiting for it but my family took mercy and it came for Christmas. I always sucked at these types of games so I always had this habit of wanting to *start over* from the very beginning so I can get a fresh start ( goes to show that the game had replay value to the max )

Though I may not be speaking on Chronological Order: but the one game I remember playing with my brothers and would not stop with this game was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I may have had rpg games before but I don't remember, but this game was the first beautifully lit up rpg game I have ever played and the best part is that it had mario characters! So when I was going to Church making my communion to get baptized, the only thing rolling into my mind was playing this game lol.

Funny, they promised me this game on 3 different occasions and all failed, my birthday, for christmas, and when I got my communion, all 3 were denied and I had to go to my brother's house to go play the game. (I felt like an absolute jerk now that I look back because my aunt was the last one and she got me a Turok magazine and she thought I was disappointed, I never wanted her to feel bad but I told her that Grandma & Grandpa promised me a certain game; regardless I got yelled at for being rude lol)

Now that I look back, the only thing I can say about these games now is that they're difficult to collect, the cartridges stand out and nobody keeps those large cardboard boxes that hold the game, nuts ><

Very nice article. It brought back to that time. I forget what things were like pre-internet sometimes.

Damn the Snes is that old? I was 21 when it first came to the U.S. and I had recieved it as a gift from a girl I was seeing at the time. I have to say this is my second favorite system

Well I have a lot of great memories of playing the SNES with friends and even my older brother.

#1. Come on it has to be playing Super Mario World... it only came in the box with the system! I really enjoyed this game for many reasons but I remember riding that dead dino in the lava and thought WOW! This is cool!!!

#2. Aero Fighters always has good memories for me, it's one of the many games I could get my brother & friends to play co-op with.

#3. Final Fight It was another game I would play co-op with my brother. I love the gameplay of this one, it's simple button mashing at it's finest! Besides who doesn't like Mike Haggar? What... You don't? Don't make me 360 pile drive you!

#4. Super Street Fighter II Turbo This game is just legendary so legendary I have a friend who drops by every few years and we battle it out. He talked so much shit I hit him in the eye with my SNES controller! (it's still brought up)

#5. Super Mario Kart was a game I used to play battle mode with friends. We would have all nighters playing this game, first one to 99 wins WINS!!!!!!!!!! I miss those sat nights :(

#6. U.N. Squadron Wow! I loved this game I would get drunk playing this game all the time. My Brother would play this too but we took turns I would play a stage then he would play the next. It was fun to watch and play!

#7. Pocky & Rocky This was a strange game but it was a blast. Must be a theme here co-op??? Man where are my gaming friends at now? Fuck! Eh anyway I must have beat this one with 6 different people bitd. If you have not played this get to it now!

#8. Rock N' Roll Racing this was always a great time single player or multiplayer. I preferred it as multiplayer most of the time but would play it solo a lot. I liked the music in this game just an all around great game!!! (hardly makes people's top what ever lists)

#9. WWF Super WrestleMania That's right I put a LJN game on the list! What? You don't like wrestling games? Dude, obviously you do not know how to co op!!! Another game I would play but these types would be 3 or more of us and the winner stays and you pass the controller to the right. Alway's a drunken mess when this was being played.

#10. Contra III The Alien Wars This was the first game that I got for the Snes that I was more than blown away by the gameplay and the graphics it's one of the main reasons the SNES is one of my favorite systems. I put this on my MAME arcade cab and lay down on the couch and just let the demo play. untill I fall asleep and the machine shuts down. (too many things to say about this game so I will just cut it short.)
