I would suggest using a multimeter and verifying that it is indeed a null modem cable. Just use a multimeter to verify that pin 2 (at one connector) is connected to pin 3 (at other connector) and vice versa.ChooChooBot wrote:After further inspection I believe my cable is a null modem cable.

Com ports will also list USB ports as well. It's not quite that simple, basically you'll have to use trial and error to find it. Whenever I use serial coms I have just memorised which port is what basically.Hobie-wan wrote:Go look in device manager under the 'Ports' section. Click on the plus to expand it. The serial communications ports will be listed as COM#. I imagine the game on each machine will need do know what com port you want to use. Since they are laptops you will probably only have one listed, but will still have to indicate this to the game.

Well I'm just testing my variables now. I now know its Com Port 2. My Game can now host from COM 2 when It used to not be able too. I believe the problem is my cable. I bought it awhile ago and may not be the correct cable. I'm going to hunt down a new null modem cable and try that. Thanks for the help and tips!

You could try something that tunnels COM ports over TCP/IP. I found this with a quick google.

You must be confusing with a different OS. The OP said they were on XP, so it is straight forward. They might have more com ports listed if they have a modem, but it is a laptop so I expect 2 at most. They should see something like this.Niode wrote:Com ports will also list USB ports as well. Ah forgot about that. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass on Windows 7.Hobie-wan wrote:You must be confusing with a different OS. The OP said they were on XP, so it is straight forward. Windows 7 device manager is not that much different than XP. Serial ports are treated the same as XP.Niode wrote:Ah forgot about that. Then what the fuck am I thinking about? All I know was when I was using a TTL cable to fix my HDD's drive controller, when I wanted to select my TTL cable I had 9 com ports.gtmtnbiker wrote: Windows 7 device manager is not that much different than XP. Serial ports are treated the same as XP.
