SM's Top 100 NES/Famicom games

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

Hey Racketboy, I've started what will be an ongoing series as I count down my personal top 100 NES/Famicom games list.

Yes, there are already plenty of NES top 10?s, top 25?s and even top 100 lists all over the net. So why should you care about my top 100 list?

My aim here was to make a unique list that goes beyond simply my picks and my thoughts about them. This list was carefully crafted based on my experience of well over seven hundred individual titles for both the NES and Famicom. My criteria for this list was based on three factors – Overall appeal, uniqueness, and how well each have aged.

This list will include every kind of software ever written for the hardware, whether it be NES, Famicom, unlicensed, prototype, homebrew or Hong Kong original pirate – if it was sold in some forum, it's fair game for this list. The only type of games I have excluded are hacks of existing games. While many of these are incredible, I may at some point in the future write a separate list for these alone.

I've already got the first three parts done and up.

part 1, #100-90
part 2, #89-80
part 3, #79-70
part 4, #69-60
part 5, #59-50
part 6, #49-40
part 7, #39-30
part 8, #29-20

Big endeavor! I'm going to enjoy reading all hundred. You've already covered a game I'm unfamiliar with but now really want to try out with Xexyz. Nice work so far! Can always easily tell you put a lot of thought and work into your articles.

Very nice article! I look forward to future posts.

Surprised that Guardian Legend (Guardic Gaiden) is so low on the list.

Great list! I actually did not know that Xexyz included plattform-elements as well as the shooting stages. Guess I have to track down a copy. Also, I am surprised about the somewhat low placing of The Guardian Legend, and extremely surprised by the even lower placing of Star Tropics (a top 25 game in my opinion). Also, Star Tropics surely has a few tricky areas that should put the difficulty rating slightly higher than 5? Anyways, nobody will agree with everything on a list like this, but its clear that you know your stuff when a unreleased game ends up on the list. Looking forward to continue reading this!

^ That list is rather horrible haha. I don't agree with most of those picks at all so I don't think I'll be taking anything from them. Besides, I already figured out which games i'll be including; I'm not making this up as I go.

Here's part 2 of my ongoing look back on the best of the best for the NES and Famicom. Here's #89-80. Hope you guys enjoy and maybe learn of some hidden gems!

You definitely do. It is definitely one of the most underrated NES games in my opinion.

They don't take it so serious :) But your list is much better, it really shows that you know your stuff.

great blog, went back and read some of your older posts. Very good info.

I think you're on your way with the top 100. I'm seeing some good games listed and haven't seen much I wouldn't have put on the list so far.
