I don't particularly. The article does, however, have a page full of measurements taken that illustrate that the PSX is not on par with a high end CD player.
This keeps coming up, audiophiles are fooled by the extra jacks putting out the bad info.
Audiophiles like the early model PSXs because the DAC is a separate chip. Plenty of them are adding/modding plugs on the 1000 and 5000 series models. Later models have the DAC incorporated into another chip.

Well that could be a good thing then. So since the GC games will be VC and the Wii is a souped up Gamecube, hopefully it will just be able to run off the Wii chips and still be 100% backwards compatible so that the only thing keeping GC games off of VC would be licensing issues as there shouldn't be a need to write/customize an emulator for each GC game... hopefully.

Well, the other thing is that specific DAC chip was supposedly the same as one that was used in some really nice sound systems. Of course, that doesn't mean it's used the same way in the PS1.
Some audiophiles do know what they're talking about--especially a few I know that have worked in the recording business. They can usually provide the science behind their opinions. Others tend to be fooled by placebo effect. Then there are the people with lousy ears who assume anyone with more accute hearing is a liar. They're just as bad.
Jamisonia wrote:I would assume the one with a separate DAC chip is easier to Digital Audio mod then.
Most aren't doing digital audio mods AFAIK, so much as directly wiring the DAC to the RCA outs. Again, most of the fuss is due to that particular chip. There's probably little left un-tampered with in the setup though. I linked to it already, but diy audio's thread on the subject is currently around 260 pages. Got people adding optical out, some trying to do optical in, changing up power, putting the whole mess in custom enclosures...
I'd be half-inclined to think that it's also just a very common, cheap device for people who like to mod that kind of gear to mess with. While I do care about audio to an extent, and don't immediately discount -everything- said by the enthusiast community...the fact that my 1001 sits unmolested, gathering dust probably says enough about how much I personally buy into the hype
Reminds me of when Nintendo removed the component out on the Gamecube late in its life. Now whenever we buy a used Wii, we have to make sure it has Gamecube controller ports.

At least they didn't do this until late in the Wii's lifespan. There won't be nearly as many GCN-less Wii's outs there as the regular ones. I doubt that the Wii is going to be around for more than another year or so.
