Apparently Nintendo is taking after Sony now.

Kotaku also posted it with an image http://kotaku.com/5831667/the-wii-gets-a-redesign
Dropping Gamecube compatibility and the ability to put it vertical, much like subsequent PS3 revisions did (for PS2 compatibility and...vertical-ness that is).
Seems like an odd revision, but the EU is also getting a wifi-less PSP. http://kotaku.com/5831405/sony-launchin ... sp-for-99-[update-europe-only]
Revised Wii system
Re: Revised Wii system
Sounds like a smart move. The people who are likely to play Gamecube games already have a Wii, this seems entirely marketed at the casual market who don't give a shit about backwards compatibility and will most likely play only Wii Sports Resort, Just Dance and Wii fit (or whatever the current fitness game du jour is) on it.
Removal of the GC compatibility means lower costs for Nintendo as not only is the obvious removal of the GC ports, but also that fancy slot loader that could take both GC mini DVDs and full size Wii DVDs, now they can just use a standardised full size DVD slot loader which is massively cheaper.
Depending on the price, I might pick one up, just so I have another spare wii (both my Wiis are hacked to run homebrew and HDD loading) with official firmware for playing new disc games without having to worry about compatibility or firmware updates etc.

Wow, I wonder how much it'll be (assuming we're getting the same thing in the States).
Re: Revised Wii system
What about folks who like using their Gamecube controllers for Wii games that support them?
Kind of like the Wii U stuff, it might be fine for people who are new to the consoles, but for those who have the library of old games having backwards compatibility is nice. Obviously, a backwards-compatible Wii isn't expensive these days, and will likely never be rare...but still...
Would be nice to see some plusses to go with the minuses. Integrated HDMI, more built-in storage, that sort of thing.

What does the gamecube controller give you that the classic controller doesn't?isiolia wrote:What about folks who like using their Gamecube controllers for Wii games that support them?

Re: Revised Wii system
The idea is to have a Wii at super low cost though, this is no different than the top loader NES that removed features (composite AV out, unused bottom expansion port, power on LED) or the SNES mini that removed features (built in RF, S-Video output, power on LED). I'm sure Wii's with Gamecube support will still be available to buy new for some time.
edit: And in my opinion, the Classic Controller is a lot better than the Gamecube controller. Especially the Pro.

8 player (4 wii motes and 4 gcn controllers) bomberman in Bomberman Blast. The ability to use my gamecube arcade stick in Tatsunoko vs Capcom. The casuals won't notice or care. I am suprised that they are doing these revisions now. You would have thought they would have done this sooner.Niode wrote:What does the gamecube controller give you that the classic controller doesn't?isiolia wrote:What about folks who like using their Gamecube controllers for Wii games that support them?

Re: Revised Wii system
Smart move by Nintendo
I never play Gamecube games on the Wii, have a GC for that. I think there are a lot of Wii owners who don't use the Wii for Gamecube games, so many Wii games out there. A shame losing the GC controller ports, but the Classic Controllers fills the void in most situations.
This Thread made my day, it emphasizes continual support for the Wii console. At least online support will stay for a while longer, hopefully the next five or even ten years. I was worried the WiiU would kill the older Wii support right away.
