SP's are beautiful :)
But I think it's a shame that the older systems are given the cold shoulder just because it's harder to see.

I also tried something with a really beat up GBA. --Sighs-- I gave up for the moment...
I didn't COMPLETELY ruin it, but there's a couple brown marks on the LCD screen now. I was trying to back light it, even though it's not supposed to be possible.
But in GBC mode (not stretched), the damaged part is off screen. So when I resume experimentation on it, maybe That will serve as a lighted GBC.

But really, front lighting is the way to go from what I'm seeing. And there's not much risk involved as you're really not bothering the screen a whole lot.

What I really want to know is if there's a special plastic screen you can order for front light dispersal. I assume the GBA-SP1 uses something like that and is what I'd really need for front light attempts to work right.

I found this link: http://www.choochoobot.com/builds/gameb ... d-001.html :) I don't know if it could help you or not though. If you could do this, I'd pay you to work on my GBC.

That is a slick mod. I'd like something like that for my original GBA.

The SP light in the tutorial there looks like the 001 front lit style. I wonder if it'd be possible at all to use the 101 backlight.

Still, I'd pay for either one in my original GBA.

Wow, I was going to use this one:
http://mikejmoffitt.com/tut/tut_cgb.html

But your link is MUCH better.

I've already said that I don't want to waste my GBA-SP1 screen on a GBC. I'd much rather save it for my NGPC or Wonderswan.

And that is the main reason that I haven't done it yet. That and I've got my hands full with Game Gear fixes ATM.

It looks pretty straight forward though. I'm sure I could do it. I've even put a working LED light in a Game Boy pocket, although that project didn't pan out; but that was mostly because The ribbon cable got disturbed from removing those blasted back layers.
The GBC doesn't have those layers, so I feel confident enough to mess with it.

BTW. if anyone knows how to solder those ribbon cables back together or if it's save to use a soldering iron ON the ribbon cable, let me know. It's not the actual ribbon cable that tore. It's some small contact points between ribbon cables (I need a pic don't I?, **sigh** maybe later)

Anyways, yeah, I could do that GBC mod, especially if you are supplying the parts (assuming you'd trust me with it). Almost looks like fun even; I'm in a tinkering mood lately.

As for the original GBA, I'm not sure if a backlight is possible or not. I haven't gotten that far.
And as I said in a previous post, I slightly damaged my GBA when I removed the metal backing, which has some pretty tough adhesive. It came off, but left a couple brown marks on the screen. I really don't know how to completely avoid that.
I still think front-lighting is the way to go.

Here's a link to a GBA mod using the same GBA-SP1 front light:

The lighting looks pretty dull in the pics though :|

Ahhh I see you found my guide :D. Nice to see people finding it helpful. To answer your question about the missing ribbon cable connectors there is an easy way to make your ribbon cable functional again. Where your two connectors broke off you should see two copper traces inside the tiny ribbon cable. Using an Exacto-knife gently remove the plastic layering exposing the copper traces underneath. Once the traces are exposed solder your wires too them, and your frontlight should be fully operational again.

That's good instruction for the back-light "oops". :D Hopefully I won't need it.
However, I failed to mention what ribbon cable I was talking about. I was tinkering with a Game Boy Pocket

Here's a couple pics of what I need to repair (ignore the led and green wires, I was just experimenting):

The 2nd pic shows what came apart. I just wanted to know if there's an easy way to solder them back together without involving a wiring mess.

I have never opened or owned a gameboy pocket. So it's kind of hard for me to tell if its safe to solder it, when I have never held one in my hands.

Oh hey. It's the guy who did that awesome light/speaker mod & paint job for the GBC. Do you do mods for other people? If so, how much do you charge? There are some people on this forum who would be interested, myself included.

After considering your request I could make one for $125 dollars. (That's shipping Included.) If you have a color in mind you want, list me your 3 favorite colors greatest to least liked, and I will get you one of the three. If you have any more questions about pricing or the mod you can email me at [email protected]
