Matter of opinion, I guess.. Personally, I named Portrait because it's my personal favorite. Both Order of Ecclesia and Portrait play a bit more linear-like than the Metroidvania games. Dawn of Sorrow is indeed a great game, but it plays basically like "Aria of Sorrow 1.5: DS Remix"...

Also, I thought in the OP it said to name only one game from each series?

This is an incredible sequel to Retro Game Challenge. This entry explores retro gaming directly where the first left off. While the first focused on the years of 1985-1989, this one focuses on 1989-1994 with representations of the arcades of that time, the 16-bit era, the Famicom Disk System, and even the Gameboy.

I think Dawn of Sorrow should be in the list. The Soul mechanic is the best of the GBA Castlevania titles by far (in my opinion at least). I think the fact that this is one of the few Castlevania titles that got a direct sequel (as you say, sort of like a DS remix) re-using that mechanic indicates just how good it is.

I haven't experienced it, but the Glyph system from Ecclesia seems to be quite inspired from the Soul system as well (at least from what I read about it).

I concur. DoS is awesome and so is the mode that lets you play as Julius/Yoko/Alucard. Brights back memories of Castlevania 3!
