SNES trouble, video not showing. Sound is fine

Post by kissmykandi »

Hey guys, you can see I'm obviously new here, I joined to try and get some help on this issue so here's hoping you can help.

I've done a tonne of google searches and so far have turned up flat in results, I've also read through this thread here but it didn't help much.

I recently acquired a pretty old tv (pictured below) to fuel my desire for retro gaming authenticity, I have no idea how old it is probably mid 70s to 80s, just that it requires a lot of tuning and only has one cable port. (for rf)

I've been trying for about the past week to try and get my SNES working on it but no luck so far. I know that it works because I've hooked it up to our newer tv using rca cables with no issues at all.

However because this tv uses an rf cable I'm having some difficulty. I'm using the official rf adapter that came with my SNES (as well as a brand new extra) but it doesn't seem to have a channel or PAL setting switch on it. I've tried connecting it directly into the tv and also into the vcr I have and both produce the same result, excellent sound, no picture. (Except with the vcr there's static instead of a blank screen)

I've tried tuning the vcr into the right channel however I still can't seem to get picture, only sound and static.

Sorry for the wall of text, I'm just trying to give as much detail as possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Check something else to ensure the TV is getting a picture on other devices. Hook the cable into it, or another game system.

I'm doubting you'll be satisfied with the results. Might end up terribly fuzzy or with interference snow. RF is best saved for 70s and 80s consoles simple enough that won't matter.

I beg to differ. Checked out my Atari 7800 s-video mod. Makes a huge difference.

The channel switch is on the system, not the switchbox. I don't know what channels PAL uses, but with old US systems if the TV and console didn't agree on channel you could get sound but either a terrible or no picture.

The TV works fine, it gets channels and the VCR picture shows up clearly when I play videos.

The console doesn't have a switch either, I checked the TV, rf adapter and console top to bottom. No switches to be found unfortunately.

Huh. That's unusual. No switch should mean your SNES is either modded, broken, or the redesign I don't think was even released in PAL (and didn't have rf anyway).

Not much I'd know myself being in the deepest depths of NTSC-land.

Well I'm from Australia if it helps, so my console is different to the ones released in the US.

Yeah but I wasn't joking there. A missing channel switch implies that SNES is defective. The smaller model without it, Nintendo didn't bring to your country.

hook up the super nes to your VCR and play from there.

you may lose some video quality but at least you'll get to play.

Also from what I can tell, your old tv has fine tuning knobs.

Open the little door in the front and there may be some little round things.

they have something like this

VHF 2-6
VHF 7-13
UHF 14-66

Connect your SNES and turn it on, fiddle with the low VHF knob untill a clear picture shows up.

Old TV's did this so you wouldnt have to channel surf through static. You could then program each button to a specific channel
