Yeah, I was being more combative than anything. Those shmups are fine, but I'd take almost any second tier Saturn shmup over any of them.Breetai wrote:Super Aleste, Super R-Type, R-Type III, Area 88/UN Squadron, Axelay, Gradius III (despite massive slowdown!), the three Parodius games and the Twin Bee sequel are all good or very good. Fortunately, they are all fairly common. Just Super Aleste is a bit more expensive. Still, the Saturn list of good/very good shooters is MUCH longer.dsheinem wrote:That's because they aren't very good.pakopako wrote:Sheesh. The Saturn really is becoming more expensive to collect for.
I couldn't imagine SNES shmups jumping around this much.
What should I collect next? Sega Saturn or Super Nintendo?

Not to mention the top tier stuff. Great variety.
Game Tengoku/Game Paradise is also a very fun vert shooter that isnt too pricey... And it has TATE!
Its also worth noting that if you aren't worried about spinecards, you can usually get these even cheaper.
I got Donpachi for $15 that way... But now I want a complete copy

I'm a big fan of the SNES personally, but for some of the genres you listed, they're both great choices. I play my SNES more, but I've picked up a handful of Saturn imports over the years that have been a blast.
I don't know my way around the Saturn RPG library very much, but the SNES has many classics that people rant and rave about regularly. Conversely the SNES shmup catalog isn't as good as the Saturn's. That's not to say that the SNES shmups are all terrible, they're just not as good. Fighting game wise, the SNES is an older console with an older generation of 2D fighters, similar to Street Fighter II. The Saturn has more fighters with high-res sprites that are much closer to the modern fighter, such as X-Men: Children of the Atom, Vampire Hunter, Samurai Shodown 2, etc. The closest the SNES gets is in its port of Street Fighter Alpha 2.
Oh, and there is a SNES port of World Heroes. It's not necessarily a bad fighting game, it's more of an acquired taste. I happen to be a big fan of the original World Heroes.

X-men vs Street Fighter is one of my favrite fighters. Well worth checking out. It makes Children of the Atom and Marvel Superheroes look like crap imo, and blows any snes fighter out of the water

Oh man...SNES or Saturn? That's a toughie...What do you like more Platformers and JRPGS, or Shmups and Fighters? The simplest way to decide is to get both
The consoles themselves are about the same price, and then instead of straight collecting a system's library, just get games that look fun to you at the time. Just have fun with it you know? You can't go wrong with either, but if you are shopping around locally you will probably have far better luck finding the better SNES games then any Saturn games.
Another quick thought: SNES doesn't have DAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYTTTTTTOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!! keep that in mind. I don't know why but that is probably one of my favorite games on the Saturn. It's like a cheesy bad movie that you can't help but love.

Re: What should I collect next? Sega Saturn or Super Nintendo?
Wow. This has helped me a lot more than I thought. I think the point about the cave shooters really was a big deal breaker for me with the Saturn. I've been thinking about going with the SNES since the RPGs are some of the classics and then saving money for a 360 with all the cave ports. The one thing that the Saturn has me by is the allure of exploring the console, but even then I believe you gotta shell out ~$35 to play imports? That is a copy of Chrono Trigger right there!! Any more advice will be helpful since I'm still not 100% on my choice for the SNES. Thanks!
Yeah, I've given it thought about keeping both since I do have both consoles right now. However, when I decide to collect something I really like to be concise. I rather have a really good Saturn or SNES collection that a mediocre of both. To me I think the real debate is between JRPGS and Shmups, the fighters and platforms are an added bonus to both consoles.Betamax001 wrote:Oh man...SNES or Saturn? shoot if you havent explored the saturn yet then go for it because its amazing. Most people here just suggested the snes because the games are more easy to come by.
But for the world of unknown like that of the saturn, then with all do respect please start your adventure.

I would like to add another reason why I'm having a hard decision with this is because if I were to collect for both consoles, the money I have to spend on PS3 games would greatly diminish. I prefer to collect for one retro and one modern at a time. Keeps me in touch with both the past and present

Collecting for the Saturn is a lot more fun, in my opinion, but for your interests, there's no way I couldn't recommend the SNES.

I depends on what you plan to do with your collection. If you're going to play it, collect SNES. If you just want to collect, go with Saturn.
