I'm wondering what the legality of these games actually are? I'm not talking about homebrew, but rather mass released ones like Tengen's Tetris or Gauntlet. Did these companies find loopholes and actually find a legal way to release these games? Or are they illegal releases?
I know some of you members find it ridiculous to be worried about this sort of thing. But I want to make sure it's all Kosher because I'm a Christian and I'm trying my best to play by the rules.

Re: Unlicensed NES Games
If you're going to ask that question maybe you shouldn't be playing any NES games at all since the whole licensing thing that they squeezed money out of publishers was deemed illegal.BurningDoom wrote:Do you know if that was completely legal in the U.S.?noiseredux wrote:they reverse engineered the mechanism that locked out "unsigned" cartridges.
Tengen actually did some dirty tricks on the NES front and EA did some on the Genesis front. Reverse engineering is legal if done properly where something mimics the functionality of something else without copying the mechanism exactly.

Re: Unlicensed NES Games
Tengen made their own "10NES" Rabbit Chip
I modded a NES to kill the 10NES chip to play FC carts and bootlegs. In my review of a pirate cart which has "Tetris 2", I have info and links concerning the infamous and best Tetris that got recalled: Tengen Tetris
Click and Scroll down for Tengen Tetris, scroll up to the OP for the Mod.

Officially the game was legal then became illegal thru the courts and recalled. A very good Tetris game that can be bought legally used although an expensive collectors item. Tengen Tertris can also be discovered as Tetris 2 on bootleg carts.

Re: Unlicensed NES Games
I'm pretty sure Peter's book won't have a chapter about you playing Nintendo games. Just because god is all-seeing, does that mean he understands all? This would be more of a theology argument, not really what your question was about.
if you won't play unlicensed games then you surely will never get to enjoy any of the Xian themed games on the Nintendo. the Xians who wanted to make games for the Nintendo had to do it illegally.

Re: Unlicensed NES Games
Most unlicensed NES games are completely legal. Games such as Tiles of Fate, Tengen Tetris, and Vindicators do not infringe on any company's trademarks, patents, or copyrights. Nintendo may not have been happy that they were released - and it may have done everything in its power to keep them off the market - but it is fine for you to buy, sell, trade, and enjoy them.
The only unlicensed NES games that are "illegal" are pirate carts. (Even then, it is not illegal to possess and play them. It is merely "illegal" to create and distribute them.)
There are some interesting decisions on these subjects, and, if anyone is interested in them, I may be able to post links to them.

Re: Unlicensed NES Games
Don't forget about the unlicensed Wisdom Tree releases. Not that you'd want to play them anyway.
