I like the gimmick of glasses-free 3D. I know a lot of people don't care for it, but I think it's cool. I should be excited about this price drop. While the price drop is somewhat enticing, I feel like I'd be boarding a sinking ship to buy a 3DS now.

You would have been boarding a sinking ship to buy one at launch. To buy one now, is like exploring the wreck of the Titanic under the water.

I think this is a smart move by Nintendo. The 3DS is anything but a sinking ship - Nintendo just released the damn thing way too soon. They should have waited till now or even a month from now when there would be software to go on the shelf with it.

That software is coming and this new price point should get people on board. It kinda sucks for early adopters like myself but that is the risk you take sometimes.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

personally i dont think its early release and lack of eshop taht tank the sales of the 3ds, its the freaking price lol.

Common 250 ! you could go out and buy a next gen console with that amt of cash.
If they sold that thing @ $199 in the begining they wouldnt have to drop it to $170 now.

I have to be real when I say that I thought the 3D was going to be crap before I even got my hands on it. I've owned one since launch, and even though I'm not too happy about such a soon and steep price drop, I really do have to recommend the system to anyone who can appreciate Nintendo titles and/or glasses free 3D, especially now that the system is much cheaper.

I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the handheld so far (OoT, Shadow Wars, SteelDiver, and a couple GB games), and while the library so far isn't blowing anyone away, it does still look pretty solid as far as upcoming titles (Mario Land 3D, Luigi's Mansion 2, MGS3D).

EDIT:

That's pretty rough. 3DS's launch resembles every other system launch I've experienced. Expensive system, very few games, everyone trying to predict victory or failure, everyone trying to justify buying or not buying.

I honestly think this is a smart move by Nintendo. With a price drop that significant, we're bound to see sales pick up, not to mention the upcoming holiday season.

Most importantly, I read that Nintendo has already sold about 4 or 5 million 3DS systems and we're less than 6 months in...That's better than the original DS sold in the same time frame and look how that turned out.

That's actually kinda nice for someone like me. I would never buy these download games in the first place, but if they are free, that's pretty cool.
20 Free games from Nintendo license game! I'm in :) . Not like Sony's welcome back giveaway.

In Nintendo of America's own press release, they used 830,000. I didn't bother to check the other regions. Also, read my earlier really long post in this thread for my 3DS thoughts.

Big news that I didn't see coming so early on. I knew sales were down, but this is a big drop

Kotaku has a nice article about the history of console price drops that helps put this in perspective.

Bottom line: it is a substantial drop, but not historically unprecedented.
