Making Game Reviews

Post by xAtomik »

Hey everyone, probably little to none of you know I have a youtube channel which I plan to make reviews on games and consoles. Specifically Game Boy. I was wondering if you could give your opinion on what you would like to see in a game boy game review.

For example:

1. Would you like me to play the game and talk or pre record game play and talk over it.

2. Around how long should it be.

3. Etc, etc,.

I'm asking this because as the creator of these videos I can't really view them like a viewer can and improve them. (Well I can, but you can do it better.)

Thanks

I actually have a game channel of my own and plan to do game reviews myself. When I do, I want to do mine in a style similar to this: Good luck with your channel!

"pre record game play and talk over it" is most watchable IMO.
But maybe you could even mix it up a bit and use both styles in the video. Dynamic presentation keeps the viewer engaged.

I'd shoot for the magic 2-4 minute range as far as time. Only go over 5 Min if it absolutely requires the extra attention. Many people lose interest if it's too long (or even skip over it).

And try to refrain from pinpointing every detail of the game; that's what guides/faqs are for. Give us your unique take on the game.

Anyways, those are my thoughts. Hope you are successful whether you use them or not :)

Skip the intro, especially if it's more than 5 seconds.

Do it in text form rather than video if you want to increase the number of viewers. People like me on capped internet can't go around watching youtube all the time.

THIS. Text and JPGs. Easier for a close study and not having to slug thru a video.

If I were to make video reviews, I would go with some gimicky high speed and prolific review style. Maybe call it "The 52 Second Review" series. Keep your reviews tightly on that time frame, show video, talk fast and use editing and time crunching effects to keep up the pace. I think most people looking for video reviews want to see a glimpse of the game, know what's cool about it and what's not, maybe hear a joke, then move on. Makes lots of sharp and fast reviews and people will subscribe to your channel.

I'd watch that. Brilliant idea.

Yes, text and images please. Most videos just plain suck. When I'm looking at a review, I want to go over it on my own time, not the forced pace of a video with some annoying voice. If you absolutely have to show a gameplay clip, that's OK, but it seems that 99% of the internet has zero idea about how to make an engaging video sequence.

In short, video out, text and images in!

So true, I hate when a video review has a jumpy camera, reviewers personal music that noone else likes and comments interfering with what I really want to see in a video, just the gameplay.

Maybe just a video capture of the game in action with an accompanying review of text and JPGs?
