Super Metroid: Eris

Post by classicgamer5 »

I just found out about this hack, was wondering if it were possible to get a reproduction cart of it? Also, has anyone actually played it? I want to know how good it is.

People here definitely can I'm sure, I would say dig into the The Garage forums. Off the top of my head I know Ziggy can do this stuff and others too I'm sure.

Is this rom hack actually good though? I have to say I get pretty tired of the "must make the game nearly impossible" mentality a lot of rom hackers go by (Super Metroid Redesign is a perfect example). I was into the community myself like 10 years ago, and back then thinking of playing LTTP or SM rom hacks was like a dream... but now that it's happened, the random ones I've played off and on just haven't held my interest at all.

I loved Super Mario Bros 3 Challenge, but that's about the only brutally hard rom hack I really enjoyed.

Finally someone else agrees! Why the heck do they make their hacks so ridiculously hard? Especially Metroid hacks, which always rely on some of the hardest to pull off moves continuously to get anywhere. Aside from a few people, who finds that FUN?

This hack though (eris):

"After Cliffhanger, I decided to make another hack which didn’t challenge the player with difficult techniques. Rather, intuitive exploration and cautious battles. A new world, aesthetically superior to Cliffhanger."

So, it has potential..

Is having a repro cart of a ROM hack you've never played really what you want, or are you just looking for a way to play this on a real SNES? If you just want to play ROM hacks on real hardware, there are much better options available than building repro carts--or worse yet, destroying other vintage games to make them.

Haha, ditto. I mean I'd say I know Super Metroid like the back of my hand, I can do ~50 minute speedruns myself, mastered the wall jumping and all the tricks, but still... the absolute PERFECT precision that you need in some of the hacks I've played is just simply not fun, it's just annoying trial and error. What I want is just a solid redux on Super Metroid with some good new level design, textures, and idea's, I won't mind some extra challenge but too many rom hackers rely solely on that or something.

I did play some great Metroid hacks back in the day, it's been so long though I have no idea what any of them were called though. Had a lot of fun messing with MetEdit myself back then.

...I want to play it on an actual SNES

Then you should grab one of these and a CF card, or one of these and a box of floppies. They'll handle any game that doesn't need a special chip. Either one is worth dozens of repro carts.

So expensive, I really want one of those myself someday. 5 year warranty? Damn I guess that's pretty nice though.
