It looks great, and I love that it has four player support. Too few studios recognize the value of local multiplayer these days.
Now if only they'd port this to a console…

Played this with an Xbox 360 controller last night, loved it.

JT, what game(s) in the genre would you most compare it to when things get going?
The developers were influenced by Cave, Treasure, ZUN, and Takumi. Some of the specific games they mentioned as influences were Giga Wing 2, Deathsmiles, Ikaruga, and Under Defeat. Of those, it's probably most like Giga Wing 2. DoDonPachi is a good comparison too.

It does start out easy, but as you playthrough the higer difficulties you'll find there is plenty of challenge to be had here. Going through the lower difficulties will help prepare you for the harder settings as well. What really makes it work is the vaunt mechanic. Play through some of the challenge modes that require hitting scoring benchmarks and you will learn how to use it to maximum effectiveness.

Anybody want to challenge one another on points? :D I'm throwing down the gauntlet now to all would-be competitors.

If you do well on a level, make sure you click the "Submit High Score" button at the level clear screen. If you want to see where your rank in relation to your friends, go to the leaderboards from the main menu, then click on the button that toggles between 'global' and 'friends' high scores. You can then look at the scores of only people you are friends with on Steam.

Currently, s1mplehumar and I are the only Racketboy members I know of with published high scores. Noticing this, I took the liberty to knock down all of s1mplehumar's high scores.

Here are some pointers for getting a high score: You want to keep your vaunt running with gold coins as long as possible without dying. When your vaunt eventually runs out, you will get a big combo bonus for letting it run so long. The longer the run time for the combo, the better. You are almost always going to score more by letting the vaunt run for a long time, except in some situations where launching a new vaunt can do a huge bullet cancel with the shield and net you a bunch of points for that.

Another scoring tip is that many enemies have can be killed in a way that the word 'special' appears. It is harder and more dangerous to go for the special kills, but they will score you higher points and deliver more gold coins. Some examples of how to get these: With exploding bombs, wait right until they flash quickly before exploding. If you shoot them during this point, you get the special kill. Drill head robots deliver a special kill when destroyed in mid jump. Red brain sea creatures on level 2 deliver a special kill when you destroy their satelites first. 'Rhino' mid-size ships can garner you a special kill when you destroy their turrets first.

I'm still hoping for Steam to come to Linux eventually.
