For The Frog The Bell Tolls - Fan Translation Complete!

Post by HellHammer »

You may or may not know of the prequel-of-sorts (predecessor?) to Link's Awakening, For The Frog The Bell Tolls.

But now you do, and now you can play it in English!

Before this translation, I never knew Sakamoto was involved in this game's development. Pretty exciting. I completely recommend this game to any fan of Zelda or GameBoy.

Right? I'm pretty stoked. I've struggled through a lot of the game in Japanese, but that's all over now!

Also, I added the download link for the patch.

I started this last night.

I love that it's a game using the same engine. It's also pretty funny so far.

What I don't love is the combat. Not one bit. All you do is walk into enemies once you have your sword! Major fights are just an automatic back and forth (you don't have any input). I don't know if I'll be able to put up with that for the whole game.

Overall though, so far, so good.

I can agree with this.
You come into it expecting a system resembling Zelda combat and end up with something of an auto battle. Reminds me very much of being overpowered in EarthBound, encountering an enemy, and having the battle resolve before you even get to the battle screen.

Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the battle system, I can see why they completely remade the battle system for Link's Awakening, but I don't think it really takes anything away from the experience.

I really plan to run through this but with the combat the way it is I think I will have to break up playtime into small chunks.

The N-Sider text is pretty awesome:
Nintendo was stricken with a major conundrum of their own, which then-president Hiroshi Yamauchi presented to the R&D1 team, presumably while brandishing a switchblade in one hand, a copy of Smut Magazine in the other, and a hot bottle of sake in his third, forsaken demon hand: "What are we going to do to appeal to the market who seeks a handheld fantasy game filled with locations named after desserts, featuring princes who turn into frogs and snakes, bizarre characters with twisted senses of humor, some underage beatings of fairy tale characters, and a deranged inventor working for a parody of our company?"

I must be about 2/3 of the way through now.

As you can see a few comments above, I wasn't sold on the battle system. However, at this stage in the game, I love it. The whole game is really, really well done, and I can't wait to finish it so that I can play it again.

So there ya go. :P

Never heard of this game before now, but it does look very interesting. Definitely want to give it a go if it's anything like Zelda.

Speaking of Zelda-like games, I really hope someone will translate "Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima" someday... the LttP-inspired SFC game that prompted Miyamoto to hire Eiji Aonuma for the Zelda series.
