If this page is correct its just a standard Atari/Commodore compatible single button joystick.

*edit

The next page says the 2 fire buttons are separate. So an Atari stick would only give you button 1. But if you really wanted, it would be easy to make any stick into a 2 button one since Atari 2600 sticks are only switches, there are no actual electronics in them.
Those controllers are hard as hell to find, even in Akihabara, Tokyo! I had to keep checking for two months in order to find a controller (for the Mark III, specifically) until I found a 3rd party Hori controller (new in box!).

As for the website that Hobie gave, I'm 99% that they are full of BS when they said that, "All SEGA Joysticks and Gamepads have ATARI 9 pin plug and are compatible with SC-3000. " I have an SG-1000 and a Mark III. Both have the exact same controller port and the SG-1000 uses the exact same controller as mentioned on that website (SJ-200) hardwired into the console. Again, it's the exact same controller. My Mark III pad works fine in the SG-1000. But, this is the kicker, the SMS and Genesis/Mega Drive controllers DO NOT work properly in either the SG-1000 or the Mark III. They do recognize 1 of the buttons, which that site did get right. That they missed out on, though, is that the d-pad/joystick is different on the SG-1000 Mark I/Mark II/Mark III and presumably the SC3000. Only up, right, and one button register when an SMS or Genesis/MD controller is plugged in. It's just not playable.

Just to reemphasize, all Sega joysticks and gamepads ARE NOT compatible with the SG-1000, Mark II and Mark III, and I think it's a very likely assumption that they will not be compatible on the SC300, either.

Still, VERY cool find on the SC3000!!! I've seen the odd one for sale here, but it's very rare. It went for around US$100.

Yeah, page 2 on that site says pin 5 is not used, but according to the pinouts for SMS at Gamesx, pin 5 is +5 volts. But its still looks like a simple switch controller with no IC needed, so making your own would be easy if you were determined to play a game on it.

Thanks for the info Breetai, was that for a boxed unit? (Mine is not complete at any rate, has the box and a few bits and bobs from the manual but it seems having no controller makes the bundle quite incomplete). Do you know if the SC3000H (With the extra ram) is much rarer than the standard SC3000?

Thanks again for the info guys.

Both my SG-1000 and Mark III are loose. I used a Mega Drive PSU to power both of them, a Mega Drive AV cable for the Mark III and I was extremely lucky to find an actual SG-1000 RF switch in a Hard-Off (used electronics shop) near my apartment. I went a few months before I could even play the Mark III, as I couldn't find a controller for it! That's the reason I'm well familiar with the controller issue here.

As for the SC3000, I have no idea if it is any rarer than the SC3000. I've only ever physically touched an SC3000 once in my life, and I don't remember if it was the 'H' model or not.
