So I got hold of a cheap Playstation (original, not the PSone) today, and it powers on fine, and even reads discs ok, but when it does so, it loads them incredibly slowly, and then stops. I tried playing Crash Bandicoot, and it loaded the the user license screen after abotu 10 seconds, followed by a company logo a good 20 seconds later. Then the title music kicked in, but no more loading screens appeared.
I tested with FFIX after that, which I know is working fine. Again, I got a short wait before the squaresoft logo appeared, then a whole lot of nothing after that.
Any suggestions for fixes?

Sounds like the CDrom drive is failing. You may still be able to order new ones from sites like NCSX and play-asia. There is a very small calibration screw on the side of the drive that you can try adjusting. All it takes is a slight turn in either direction. This will only temporarily resolve the problem, however.
edit: If you decide to order a new drive, try this guy: http://store.richspsxparts.com/pl1psonepa.html
I stumbled onto Rich's site a few years ago when looking for PS2 repair parts. I have never ordered from him, but he has been around for a long time.

easiest way to check for a cd drive fault is turn the unit upside down, if its better then adjusting the screw as mentioned can help.
