My 1st Sega Game Gear

Post by bullishportz »

Got a new toy through the post today, a Sega GameGear with a few games from a popular auction site.

Wow, i've never seen one in the flesh before, what a fantastically ridiculous piece of kit.

First off, how big is it!?! I thought this thing was meant to be portable?!

Then I popped the battery cover and inserted 3x batteries.........and then I popped the second cover and inserted another 3x batteries. 6 AA batteries!!

Fired it up and it is awesome, totally brilliant. Streets Of Rage looks and sounds so good on the little screen. :D

So in summary...............yes I like it......a lot. :)

I am happy for you! For kids back then this was portability!

Just try to see how long those batteries will last! Go get a yellow tipped sega genesis plug and use it. You may lose portabillity but at least you wont go thru 24+ batteries a week.

A recharable battery pack existed back then but they are long dead now and useless.

have fun finding these games out there! If you know where to look you can get lots of intersting games.

I second this. Unless you plan on taking that monster of a handheld outside of your home, get one of those genesis plugs. You wouldn't believe how fast those batteries go.

I agree with getting a power adapter, batteries will only last you maybe three hours.
Also I can vouch personally for the recharable battery pack being useless. Not like you're going to play this thing while on the go anyway, no way in hell could you fit it in a pocket.

I never thought the game gear was that huge... I guess till you hold a Atari Lynx then you'll think everything else is normal sized.

Game Gear is a great system. I've had mine since new and I always seem to find more games for it. Just when you think you've got all the ones you want you find something else.

You will be teathered to a wall if you want to play it. There's no portability unless you do a LCD screen mod.

NO. NO. NO. NO. NO!

Not good advice at this point!

Different region Game Gears have different power specs. The Game Gear in some regions (ie. North America) use the same yellow-tipped power supply unit as the model 2 Genesis/Mega Drive. HOWEVER, this is NOT always the case! Some regions use the same one as the model 1 Mega Drive (ie. Japan, I think the UK...). I do not personally know which PSU the Game Gear uses in every region, and I suspect I am not the only one. If you screw this up, you might risk damaging your Game Gear with the reversed polarity.

I highly suspect the OP for this thread is not American or Canadian. So, "Bullishportz", where are you from? I might guess somewhere in the UK based on the way you write, but I don't know for sure. Either way, you should find out what sort of PSU the Game Gear uses in the country yours came from.

The AC adapter for the model 1 and model 2 Genesis have different sized plugs though. You can't plug a model 1 adapter into a model 2 console and vice versa. I would assume it's the same story for the Mega Drives. It's easy enough to find out anyway, just look at the adapter specs on the Game Gear and compare it to the specs on a model 1 and 2 Genesis power adapter.

Yup. I thought some sort of fair warning was useful in this thread, though. Hence my large and bolded "no"s. Saves the confusion if nothing else. I guess there isn't much harm in hurting the system if the plug won't even fit. I totally forgot about that!
