Good screen for DC?

Post by Ivo »

I'm going to buy a TFT monitor, and don't know yet if I'll be getting a used CRT to connect to the DC. In any case, as I'm getting a TFT, I wanted it to be good to plug my DC in. I'd like it to swivel, to play Ikaruga (or others) in vertical mode, but I guess I shouldn't be too worried about that over other concerns (such as price).

I saw some LG and Asus screens with 5ms or 2ms response time, and 20'' or 22''. Maybe it's a peculiarity of the store I'm looking them at, but I can get an Asus 20'' with 5ms for 210 EUR and Asus 22'' with 2ms for 225 EUR, so perhaps the extra 10% are worth spending for larger screen and response time?

For reference, here are the two models I saw:
20''
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=10 ... odelmenu=2
22''
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?mode ... 3=362&l4=0

There is also a 19'' screen by Asus for 170 or so. Should I check other brands?

I don't know enough about the ports and so on, but perhaps I can learn from you guys - what should I be looking for other than size and response time (I also had a look at the contrast numbers and angle of view, but without seeing the monitor "in person" it's hard to relate that with the benefits better specs give).

DC outputs 640x480 @ 60Mhz, so anything with a native mode high than that will be blurry or in a window. I have this sweet 21" CRT monitor that wanted to use solely for DC shooters, but alas it was fixed freq, and 640 was set to 85Mhz :(

Ive got a 19in Compaq mv940. What little info I could find on this old moniter told me it has an 85MHz refresh rate at a 1,024 x 768 resolution. Is that too high for a crisp dreamcast picture? What does "Native refresh rate" mean? Sorry, to backtrack... Im a newb to this stuff.

So the bottom line is really get a CRT as well, and don't bother if there is a TFT without swivel?
