Sharing my feelings...

Post by RCBH928 »

I just want to take a moment to share my feelings...

I loaded Day of Reckoning for the gamecube, and when I saw the game
I was thinking to myself "boy, those graphics are old..."

the fifth generation games are showing their age big time, and I kind of feel sad
because there was a day when some one would load up a game on the GC and
I was mesmerized at how beautiful the graphics were.

Am not sure if I picked a game with bad graphics,
for the most part I noticed the same thing with ps2 and xbox games.

The major major difference as I see it are textures.
last gen. consoles had plain graphics for the most part compared to this generation.
Of course , textures pre-ps2 , sucked big time

another thing that made me feel last generation is old, is that DOR used a menu that was very much like N64 wrestling games very basic and simple...here have a look:

Yeah I remember a time when I use to boot up PS2 games and think; "Wow, I don't graphics could ever get better than this." I was of course young and ignorant.
I don't think it should matter though, its a sign that they're getting old and on their way to turning retro!

Again I have to say how are you a member of a Retro Gaming forum when stuff like this bothers you.

I think most of the members here have the philosophy its about gameplay, not graphics.

Well, I would argue that certain kinds of old graphics look better than others, even if they are far worse when it comes to technology.

I think that Megaman looks hundreds of time better than your average N64 game,

I don't see anything wrong with the graphics in that game. I think the artists involved worked long hours with what resources they had available to keep the FPS and game play running at optimal speed for a fighting/wrestling game, and did it well. There's a lot to be said about making a low poly-count look good with a low resolution texture map while keeping the frame-rate steady on a slow cpu with limited video ram. I remember my friend rented it once and we had a bunch of good matches and didn't experience any slowdown or choppiness. I was impressed because at the time I was working with 3D graphics (back then, the software was not really intuitive) and admired the low-poly count and texture mapping they did to keep a good frame rate while making the character movement and models realistic. Of course compared to what's available now it's aged, but it's still a fun game with smooth response. What I feel sad about is that there's always a bunch of games released on consoles that are incredibly more powerful that are plagued with slowdown, skipped frames, badly mapped/chosen textures, and are still not as fun as that game is, and somehow the majority of people say they're better games.

Have you guys play Metroid Prime or Resident Evil 4 lately? Those still look spectacular to me. A lot of Gamecube/PS2/XBox era games look modest, but the ones with good art direction have aged well.

Yeah, weren't you ranting about graphics in this recent thread? Each system/gen has games with excellent graphics and games with poor graphics. Comparing across gens is just am exercise in futility.

I still think Day of Reckoning looks sexy. I like how it was amongst some the last titles to have a slightly arcadey, cartoony quality to the textures before it became all about simulation and realism.

@emwearz @noiserdux @dsheinem

u understood me wrong , I am not complaining about the graphics
i just wanted to share my feelings that gamecube is getting old
it saddens me to see a console that once i thought had most beautiful graphics, turn old
its showing its age, and my age ...

back in 2007, i didnt feel the jump was so big, but now with more advanced graphics for the HD consoles...last gen, starting to look old.

its kind of seeing like a champion falling down,
of course gamecube is on my list of the "most fun" consoles with unique games and gameplay.
