stupid question about component video

Post by noiseredux »

If I plug the Red/Yellow/White plugs of a COMPOSITE-out console into the applicable 3 inputs on a COMPONENT-in on a TV set... that works right?

Meaning, COMPONENT-in can also work as COMPOSITE-in, right?

No I don't think that would work, in composite yellow is video while red and white are audio. In component all three cables carry video and combine for an RGB video signal. I've never personally tried it but I can't wrap my mind around how they could be interchangeable.

red/white audio will work, not sure if you can plug the yellow into one of the three video connections or not

No it will not. The signals are comletely different.

Composite squeezes all of the video signal into one. All of the information gets mixed together and has to share the bandwidth.

Component sends the video down 3 channels, it doesn't get mixed together and doesn't all have to share one cable, so it comes out cleaner.

I bought some cheap at Best Buy of all places for $4 and change a few years ago. They weren't the most robust ones around, but they worked fine. Recently got some better cables and passed them to a friend who was still using composite. Gamestop and other places have those multi system cables too that will work. You should be able to find something that's inexpensive.

yeah I had my composite VGA box that I was using, but wanted to be able to use PSP on it too. So I upgraded to a component VGA box.

The good thing is that the PS2 component cable is much cheaper than the Gamecube.

For your PS2, here is a list of HD games. Note to get 480p, some require a button combo while loading. 1080i for PS2 Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy!
