Pal RF mod reversal.

Post by Zutroy »

Just got myself a pretty good condition original pc engine of e-bay wit the intention of doing an rgb mod on it and playing r-type. Once it arrived opened the casing and found it had been already modded to PAL RF. It looks scary; cables running all over the place and attaching to components all over the board like some 80's hentai!

Some how i've got to undo this before I rgb mod it. I notice some resistors have been removed from the board to accommodate the RF unit as it gouges it's way into the system. Other than de-soldering it will this require any extra work?

I've checked the output over RF and it's pretty awful, white bleeds horizontally across the screen and the picture jumps and rolls quite often, so it's definitely got to go.

Basically I want to know; how much am i biting off here, and are there any guides for the original pc engine on-line that cover this or the rgb mod?

Thanks in advance, i'll try to get some pics posted soon if it'll help.

Ok, I got a cd-rom adaptor so i could avoid messing around to much with this. I thought i'd just use the rca jacks on that and basically use the cd adaptor like a huge av booster.

This doesn't work.

I looks like the rf mod basically under-clocks the console so it outputs video at 50hz rather than 60.

So i guess i'm screwed in so far as getting an ntsc signal out of it.

Try PCEngineFX yet or gamesx? I would think removing the RF wiring would get you back to normal but you said some resistors are gone...maybe they're not needed. I've seen many A/V mods, should not be to bad. It's a shame, PCE core is so sexy.

If you need an 8PDT switch, ie if you're also going to do a region free mod, let me know. I have two spare; £5 each plus postage (that's a cheap price BTW).

Looks like i'm gonna have to replace the missing resistors and capacitors to get this to work again. Could someone upload a very high rez scan/picture of the underside of a white pc engine board?

alternatively:

r137
r138
r141

and

c137 are the components that are missing. if anyone can supply info on these components it would be much appreciated!

http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/links.htm

you're going to really need to email people who do mods on PC-Es. Or buy another one and use the understanding of the 2nd one to fix the first one. Then sell one.

Apparently a whole forum is for PC ENGINE...

seems like this guy HAD the same problem as you but fixed it.
