I want you to know I put myself at severe psychological risk by doing a google image search for these images. I hope it's appreciated.
Just search using the Japanese version's title. "Final Mission Famicom". You will avoid the trauma reminiscent of "two girls one cup"

MagMax (NES)
This one is really cool in how it's sorta like R-Type with the multiple ship powerups, but instead of powerups, you get different body parts for your robot, which you can combine in all different sorts of ways. What's also cool is that you are often given plenty of opportunities to warp underground or above ground during each level - which really makes each playthrough a unique experience depending on your chosen route.
So just yesterday I was thinking about a game that I had when I was really small and the only thing I could remember about it was fighting in a cave and then on the surface and my brother saying it was a robot game too. You gave a name to that game lost to me long ago thank you.

I'm gonna say the obvious, but you just gotta love how epic and badass old game covers were.

Hillarious, I saw a copy of Magmax in the wild last week and started laughing about how one of the guys I follow on youtube absolutely hates that game.

Not always:
Anyways, Deathsmiles, Espgaluda I & II, Mushihimesama and the SHMUP minigame on No More Heroes are the only ones I've played without ships.

Captain Tomaday - hells yes, a flying, shooting, kick-arse tomato...(who can also morph into a diapered baby, and a lizard among other things)

If you allow Parodius, then Star Parodier (you can fly as a PCE or Bomberman!)
