Now if you want to insist on people distinguishing between malicious hackers or benign hackers, that's fine. But you're nitpicking with 'cracker'.
Back when there was still a hacker vs cracker debate, we still had phone phreakers and no call display, so you could still call people up and get their passwords that way.
Hacker has evolved into the "bad" word whether anyone likes it or not.
