Picked this up on a launch day. If you register it with Club Nintendo they'll send you a free soundtrack of the game, and it has a few orchestrated themes, as supplies last.
About the game. Obviously it is still OoT. Is it better? Absolutely. Even with the 3D off the redone graphics are amazing. I just played the N64 version, and I'm just absolutely shocked at the shortcomings of the N64. I never really noticed it before.
The game has added a few things. There are new Sheikah stones outside of Link's house and in the Temple of Time that give you visions of the future to help you if you get stuck. Sort of in line with what Nintendo has been doing with their games recently. Some of the dialog has been changed slightly. The stone of agony is now the shard of agony, which beeps near a secret, since the 3DS has no rumble.
The menu system has undergone a total redesign. It uses the touch screen exclusively, it makes it much quicker to switch between items. For "C items" the 3DS utilizes Y and X plus two touch areas on the touch screen. You can also touch the X and Y buttons on the touch screen if you prefer to use items that way. The touch is obviously not as good for action oriented items like the slingshot, but works well for secondary items like the bottle or mask. Additionally they made the ocarina a separate touch button, so that doesn't have to take up a space in one of your buttons. If you always kept your ocarina set to C on the N64 version, its like having two extra spaces to put items.
The map is always displayed during normal gameplay on the touch screen. This makes it much easier to remember where you have to go as you always see the map.
The game controls better. You don't have as many weird N64 things happens, like if you get too close to the wall the camera goes behind the wall and the wall starts flickering. The aiming with the slingshot is much smoother, both using the circle pad and the gyroscope. The game has gryo controls for looking or aiming. You must turn the 3D off when using or it will mess up your vision, since you must look straight onto the 3D screen to get a good image. It actually works really well. Its faster than using the circle pad to aim. Also when holding L to look forward, when not L targeting something, you can use the gyro to move the camera a little bit. I don't think you were able to do that in the N64 version. Of course if you want nothing to do with gyro controls, you can turn them off.
The bad: they messed up the ocarina notes. Its really weird. The highest note is the A button. Which is weird since its not the highest on the diamond. Maybe the highest note on the music staff is literally an A, and they thought it would be confusing to change that, but its weird. I can't get used the buttons for the songs. Luckily they made so that when you're playing the ocarina you can have the notes to the songs displayed on the touch screen. So that it makes tolerable.
Master Quest does not seem to be available from the beginning. The game did not ask me which one I wanted to play, like the GCN version did. It might be that you have to finish the 1st quest, and it is a 2nd quest, or if you put in Zelda as your file name then your start at the 2nd quest.
If you were on the fence about this game since you played the N64 version, yes get this. It is worth it in my opinion if you loved the N64 version. If you've never played this game, go play it in some form now!

Unfortunately entering your name as "ZELDA" doesn't work. You have to beat the main game to unlock the Master Quest. Which is harder than the original Master guest on the Gamecube by the way. In this Master Quest, the monsters do double the damage and the whole game is mirrored.

I got to play it for an hour today, it was awesome. One of the best remakes I have ever played.

I was playing it when I read this review.
It really does the original justice. It's basically everything you'd want a remake to be.

I'm still waiting for my Japanese copy to arrive. I will register it right away for that soundtrack CD.
I played the original N64 game when it came out and loved it. It is the only Zelda game I really got into. It's nice that Nintendo added and changed things for the 3DS version, to make it even better. Should be a lot of fun to play through it again.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them do Mujura no Kamen (Majora's Mask) after this. They could use the same engine and interface.
