cool mod for super famicom owners!

Post by ac_90 »

i doubt no-one's figured this out yet, but i just made a cool little discovery i thought i'd share.

i noticed japanese copies of popular snes rpg's are significantly cheaper for some reason; but i've still yet to invest in a lot of the classics since i wouldn't be able to read any of the text. however, the only thing keeping american games from fitting in a japanese system is the cartridge shape.

you can buy a nice condition japanese game off ebay for under 10 bucks, buy a shit condition american one for $20, and then put the american chip inside the japanese game's housing. this way, the game still fits in perfectly visually with the rest of your collection, but you can actually read everything now. SCIENCE!

i find this method is perfect for people like me that want some visual consistency in their entire collection, but still want to be able to enjoy rpg's in english. however, i didn't wanna do this with every game cuz then it would defeat the purpose of having a japanese console! so i started searching for adapters to allow american cartridges to play on my japanese system, only to figure out they were all retardedly overpriced. not happening.

do this. just buy any cheap japanese cartridge you want for like 5 bucks and take the stickers off so it looks like a blank game and throw the chip in the garbage. then take out the screws and throw those out, and put a long, thin piece of tape on the top of the cartridge so it acts like a hinge. now you can just put the chip of any american game you want inside this beast and play it in your japanese system no problem; plus the lack of screws and addition of the tape hinge make it as easy as possible to switch out games back and forth. SCIENCE!

i thought this was going to be about buying the japanese game and changing the eeprom to the english version. you can also buy cheap PAL games and do the same thing.

i have a honeybee convertor but it only has the middle chips not the outside ones. i wonder if i could add them myself.

lol.... that's exactly what I do with my SNES games! I "convert" them to SFC by switching the cartridge shells with Japanese ones. I keep the cartridge screws attached though, to make sure everything stays together. I love using my SFC console, but want to play English games on it too. It's good that there are others who are doing this - I thought I was the only one with crazy ideas like this... :P

I don't do this with games that my brother cares about, though. I tried it with our US copy of Chrono Trigger and my SFC version, and he got mad and made me switch them back...

So you're suggesting that we take all our American cartridges apart every time we want to play them?

Um, you are aware that many of us on here are collector's with serious OCD, right? There's no way I'm going to be taking a screwdriver to any of my games! Especially not over and over.

Hell, sometimes I'm almost afraid just to take a cartridge out of its mint condition box and play them as normal!

Hehe... yeah  Understandable.

Funny thing - I'm a collector with serious OCD for my Super Famicom stuff, but not for my US SNES games (they're all cart-only). So the taking-apart-and-swapping for the games actually does work in my favor, since the English games will fit in with my Japanese collection. And I like taking things apart and putting them together again.

I beat you by a few years. :)

I started doing that with Mega Drive Phantasy Star and Shining Force games years ago. It just sucks having to use a Game Genie for PSIV. Also sucks that there's no English version for SNES Final Fantasy V.

I use a Game Doctor to play out-of-region games.
