Just got a new laptop as a graduation present.

Post by Kevman »

Now before anyone says something like "oh you could've gotten so much more out of a desktop for the same amount," keep in mind this laptop's primary purpose was to bring to college and whatever labs I need to go to since I am majoring in computer and electrical engineering.

So my parents bought me an ASUS laptop. Here are some specs:

Intel quadcore i7 processor 2.0 Ghz
nVidia GeForce GTX 460M 1gb
8gb of RAM

I've been playing Crysis and it looks great. I will probably pick up Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2 off of Steam and of course when Battlefield 3 and Skyrim come out I will be getting those as well. Any other recommendations?

Steam ID is HyperPoret btw.

You shouldn't get to much flack with a laptop like that. If it's anything like my last gaming laptop, keep the power cord local. :)

Fallout 3 goty edition is only like $25 so I'd pick that up.
Fallout New Vegas is like $15-20 but I'd wait until there's an edition with all the dlc.
The Stalker games are supposed to be pretty good too, and the first one is like $10 on amazon. The second one is cheapest on steam last time I checked- $10.

Wow, congratulations! That sounds like a great little machine you got! :) I am going to get a new laptop right before I leave for college, so I am excited that I will finally be able to play proper PC games without my computer becoming hotter than the surface of the sun and the fan turning into a wind tunnel.

There's a long history of games on the PC - is this just your first time having one that can run newer games? Preferred genres?

Is it from the Asus G series? I've been considering one of those as a possibility for a college laptop as well.

Well I have been playing PC games on and off ever since the Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun games when I was in 2nd grade  . This is the first time I have ever had a "gaming" PC. I've played games such as Battlefield, Guild Wars, some RTS games (mostly the Command and Conquer series), and some F2P games like Gunz: The Duel and Soldier Front.

My preferred genres for PC games would have to be FPS, RTS, and RPG (preferably MMO). I've been meaning to get into games such as Starcraft 2, Diablo 2, and Team Fortress 2 like I mentioned earlier, but I fear that I am too late to the party so to speak. Some of these games and series have been around for years now and from what I hear these particular games have a steep learning curve.

I'll probably still get Portal 2 and Team Fortress 2 since those series are pretty recent, but I'm still wary about the others I've listed. Am I being too paranoid or what?

Yes it is a G73. I got it from Best Buy and it came with a free 4gb Xbox 360. I'm not sure if that offer is still going on but here is the link if you are interested.

Valve ususally has a summer sale where their complete pack goes on for like 50% off. That will give you all the Half Lifes, TF2, both Portals, Counter Strike, both Left for Deads, etc. Last year the sale started June 24th, so if you can hold out till the sale starts its a solid buy.

You should get The Witcher 2, but buy it from gog.com because it's DRM free there.
