DN3D wasn't that great when it came out. Quake just came out a few months after and had real 3D models and environments.

I also must say that from what I've seen, DNF looks like a piece of shit. Almost everything I've read about the game has been equally pessimistic about it.

???

In terms of level design, enemy design, weapon arsenal, content, gameplay, creativity, and just overall fun factor, Duke Nukem 3D was flat out excellence. It blew me away when it came out. I don't know if I'd go as far as saying it was a technical achievement, but I'd go as far as saying it's easily in my top 5 FPS regardless of nostalgia. It's just an incredibly fun game that never gets old to me.

I only played the PS1 version. Even though I'm sure it cannot be compared to the PC version, it was still quite enjoyable. Some good memories right there...

I was replying to the statement in the quote. I never said it wasn't an excellent game.

3/10.. OUCH! That's certainly going to put a dent in the metascore.

Let's see if enough Duke enthusiasts will buy this to keep it from becoming a flop. But it's probably the last major game with the Duke in it, bar any possible arcade-style spinoffs.

The Build engine could do a lot more than id's Doom engine at the time, so for that I'd call it somewhat of a technical achievement, it was possible to do room-over-room design I believe which cannot be done in Doom. It's also quite a feat the creator Ken Silverman was like 17-20 years old when he made the engine.

I'll always be a bigger Doom fan personally, but DN3D is amazing stuff as well.

I'll certainly be buying it.

The day will never come when my gaming purchases are determined by reviews.

If I get the game and ultimately don't like it (unlikely) then so be it. But I will buy it.

DN3D is an example of a game that became obsolete really quickly.

Yes, but it didn't become any less fun and well designed.

Oh definitely. Shit, I think I like Duke 3D better than Quake.
