Just wondering if anyone who uses cheats or mods has standards or rules to help preserve the fun of the game?
Like, when I'd play ffvii and got my first gameshark, I'd make one character invulnerable or level quickly.. to sort of preserve some sense of game balance or maintain a tiny level of difficulty.
Also, I felt guilty for using cheats =/
standards for cheating/code abuse?

Never use them on my first playthrough. I might use them for dicking around later though, usually the weirder cheats.

This is an amazingly fun function in the pokemon games.AppleQueso wrote:I guess the walk-through-walls kinda stuff.
Walk through walls + Master Balls + Capture Trainers Pokemon
leads to some good time
(also I've never used cheats to help me beat a game)

I've never used cheats to help me beat a game, either. Usually would use them to speed through a game when nostalgia would hit me and I'd want to play through quickly.NeverGoBak wrote:This is an amazingly fun function in the pokemon games.AppleQueso wrote:I guess the walk-through-walls kinda stuff.

leads to some good time. You don't even have to recieve a starter, go find your own starter! Or just make a team of the E4, Rival and Champion poke to dick around with. Mess with the game's mind by doing events out of order and get certain event pokemon in a legit yet still cheating way. Fun stuff.

Walk through walls/and or fly..
I did events out sequence and ended up confusing myself sometimes o.O

lol you ever play Shadows of the Empire, had the most insane debug mode ever. Miss stuff like that.AppleQueso wrote:I guess the walk-through-walls kinda stuff.
For cheats I definitely never use them for a first run. In RPG's or whatnot though, if there are "exploits"... sometimes I do use them, duplicating items, or silly things like that.
I haven't really cared for Gameshark / Game Genie-esque stuff since the N64 days, since you could just really break those games and do a ton of ridiculous stuff, it was so much fun. Spent a lot of time messing with OoT with Gameshark stuff.

I used to only use them on games I had already beat, but now I just flat out never use them. Haven't in years. I prefer to never win a game than win it using cheats, even ones like Contra.

Re: standards for cheating/code abuse?
Apart from debug styled stuff the only cheats I use are in most RPGs Ill throw on an 2x or 4x EXP modifier since I would rather not have to grind as much - 2x still keeps the game difficult, just cuts the grinding in half. I recently played through Pokemon Heart Gold that way and had a blast.
Playing Chrono Trigger without a modifier right now is so much longer than if I turned on one of those nice 4x or 8x I see in the cheat menu...granted I love Chorno Triggers battle system so I havent done that yet (Ill do it to get to star levels). You can bet when I play through the Dragon Warriors on the DS I will have a 2x enabled.
