Anyone else notice that the site slows down to a crawl around 12AM GMT-8 (Pacific Time)?

Sometimes it literally takes 5 minutes to load the page. Am I alone in experiencing this?

I've had the same problem before. Seems to the point of nothing loading but it was usually really late like 1-2am PST.

cron is a service that launches scripts at a certain time of day. IE a script that sends out a newsletter on a certain day at a certain time, or PHPBB updates you with any changes to your subscribed threads etc.

Compared to last year when the site would just crash at that time every night, a little slow down is okay.

I've never noticed that it was slow at night. But then, 12 to 2 AM PST is 2 to 4 CST, and I'm not up that late, or early, using the internet.
