The Men Who Made Zelda: ALttP

Post by Rurouni_Fencer »

If the thought of A Link to the Past conjures up misty, water-colored memories of your younger self staying up to wee hours of the morning trying to navigate through the Dark World, you need to check out this article:

http://www.glitterberri.com/a-link-to-t ... made-zelda

It's an interview from 1990 or 1991 that paints an interesting picture of how one of the best Nintendo games of all time was made, from the perspective of the key developers.

....oh, and 1,000 posts. Woo! 8)

This was awesome. Among the thousands of times I've played through this game some of the stuff they talked about I've never even really thought of (not surprising with them being the devs, heh), like how impressive it was for the enemies to be on two different plains/stories and could walk underneath walkways or whatnot that were above them. Or how the enemies do in fact respond to sound around the corners sometimes.

Fireballs were originally made for Zelda... the more you know!

"Miyamoto: At first there were 3 worlds, but players would’ve gotten confused. That’s why we had to fix things up. It’s difficult to plant a new concept like that in an action game, you see."

Now that sounds interesting...

I love how they talk about the bottles or how you can play the game the way you want to play it through many times, which I've done several times myself... limiting myself via items or tunics, sword upgrades, etc. The greatness about LTTP is it's simplicity and freedom.

Best game ever. Now I need to replay it once again.

No. You're doomed for the rest of your days to be recognized as a "Next-Gen".

What I'm wondering is what's going to happen when the next generation of consoles (PS4, Xbox 720, etc) comes out. Are the titles still going to jump from 128 bit to next gen, completely skipping our current 512 bit generation?

I found it interesting that they felt the need to share the programmers blood type as part of their bio.
