Zero's origins were an interesting mystery early on and once it became clear who created him there were all those rumors that he murdered the original Mega Man, which unfortunately turned out to be false. I would have loved that dark twist to the original MM storyline, that Wily succeeded in destroying his rival. To this day it bugs me they never went that route. I would have loved a crossover game between Megaman 10 and Mega Man X showing the death of Mega Man. I love dark story lines.
If you don't mind telling me about it, when was that proven false? I'm not really familiar with the X games.

For me the most interesting story bit in the series is the question of just what happened to the original Mega Man. I've heard people say he was repurposed into X, but that doesn't sound right to me, even if only because I don't really like the idea.
Someone here once linked to an interview with Keiji Inafune where he confirmed that Zero didn't kill Mega Man, even though the games themselves seemed to hint at it.

Also, it's FACT that Mega Man isn't Mega Man X though that was a popular theory. You can find that on wikipedia. X is different from Mega Man because Light gave him the ability to make his own decisions. Theoretically that would mean that X can kill a human if wants, which Mega Man couldn't do because of some law of robotics I believe(hence Wily always coming back to cause more trouble)

We don't quite know Mega Man's ultimate fate. Maybe Bass killed him. That would be cool. I actually like the idea of Bass killing Mega Man and then being destroyed by Zero. Here's a quote from wiki to support that possibility:

"In Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Zero makes a cameo appearance, and Wily says that it is a creation that will surpass even Bass itself. Bass says that he will destroy this creation, and that no other robot is more powerful than he is. It's not explained what happened to Bass before the events of Mega Man X"

Ocarina of Time, but not just because it's so damn awesome. The game left a good bit unexplained (in my eight-year-old mind, at least). For instance, what the hell happened in the seven years that Link was "sleeping?" Yeah, Ganondorf had his way with Hyrule, but I'm talkin' specifics: Who went where? Did this person die? Why don't we ever hear from this guy anymore? WHY IS THE MARKET SO SCARY AFTERWARDS?!

These questions still haunt my brain

@Gamerforlife: I also like how both Mega Man X2-X3's endings hint at the fact that for the war to end, Zero needed to die. So imagine that... an epic conclusion between X and Zero, too bad Capcom didn't have the balls for that.

I'm with you on probably taking the X story more seriously than needed, but oh well! I'd say it really fell apart after X4 though. X5 hinted at what... Wily or Protoman coming back? Then nothing happened. And I just utterly hated X6's story, after that I didn't even bother with X7 and I beat X8 but can't even remember a single detail about it.

Seriously?

Why didn't they do that?

I think I'm among an awful lot of people when I say I wish Capcom would cross these two series over and explain some shit.

Somehow, most every video game conversation I have makes me think about Shadow of the Colossus. That game got so many things right, it's hard not to discuss it in relation to everything good about videogames.

Alright, it's been aeons since I actually played it and I just watched some videos online, my memories of the game might just be really jaded lol. But here's one of the X5 endings, extremely spoilerish even with the title and all, but check it out if you want:

Lets stop to admire the walls of hardness that exist in Rayman.
You get to band land and its all downhill from there.
That's the kind of stuff to piss you off for a lifetime.
Also, The plot twists in FF VIII will be with me forever.
SHE RAN THE FRIGGIN NURSERY!!! THEY WERE TOGETHER!!!!!
Why did Kevin Flynn blare Journey so loud in his arcade? Was he trying to hear it from the grid?

Yeah, I used to view Mega Man X as a dark, cyberpunk twist on the story of Mega Man. That was a big part of its appeal to me, but later installments really dashed all of that. Oh well. Thanks for nothing Capcom

X4 was my favorite installment because it really did take the story in a darker direction with the violent flashbacks regarding Zero's past hinting that he might have killed Mega Man and company and the first, brutal confrontation between him and Sigma that really showed Zero to be an insane killing machine when he was first discovered. Then the end of Zero's campaign hinted again that X and Zero would fight eachother to the death one day as Zero succumbed to his original programming to destroy Light's creations(which in my mind meant X AND the original Mega Man). Bad dubbing aside, X4 was pretty interesting story-wise and the bad ass Zero versus Sigma anime flashback cutscene followed by an epic present day, three stage final battle between them to end the game stands out as a true highlight of all my gaming years. I mean, that cutscene just got me so amped for Zero versus Sigma round 2. That was brilliant by Capcom! I mean just watch the cutscene followed by the battle here:

The story starting going downhill after X4 though and X5's epic confrontation between X and Zero was weak and like you said they teased Wily again and nothing came of it except some robot in X6 who seemed to know a lot about Zero

Ugh, so much potential in the X series story put to waste.
