Games you think about long after you've played them

Post by insanecow0 »

An example for me would be Fatal Frame. It's the first game that really scarred/disturbed me, so it kinda stuck with me in my mind a bit. The same goes for Silent Hill for similar reasons.

Mother 3. It knocked me for six straight out the gate, as I wasn't expecting the whole shebang with its opening scenes and it ran on full steam thereon. I remember finishing and being reminded of that sensation one gets when you've finished a really good, but mammoth novel, or a long, quality TV series, but not quite. It's something
else entirely and to compare to such things would be glib.

The Metal Gear Solid games. I was a teenager when the first one came out, and while I know now it's not all that deep philosophically, as a teenager, and unique to Metal Gear was it's exploration of war, weaponry, and soldiering in general.

Mega Man Legends.

The setting of the game is genius - it's thousands of years after all other Mega Man games. Whenever I play a Mega Man game (especially the X or Zero series) I constantly am looking for easter egg references to what happens in Mega Man Legends.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

A lot of games of course... but two that come to mind instantly are Silent Hill 2 and Xenogears. Everyone that's played them already knows why. I believe Silent Hill 2 is still the pinnacle of video game story telling.

The Metal Gear Solid series comes to mind as well (mainly MGS 1-3).

Duck Hunt. I've played that game too much I think. Other villains were always after the main character of the game, in my mind, no matter how much the developers tried to involve me in the game. I always feel like the Duck Hunt dog is laughing at me personally. Of course I know it is just a game so obviously he really isn't, but I still kind of feel that way. It's sort of creepy, but in an amusing way.

One on my mind a lot since I played it last year, System Shock 2. It wasn't just a game, it was an experience. The depth of SHODAN's character and the isolated claustrophobic atmosphere still haunts me.

Fear Effect's story creeped me out a few times. The Darkness told a pretty powerful story that stayed with me. Max Payne 2 is a game I still think of a lot because it told an effective love story that made me care. Eternal Darkness's story was kind of chilling. Metal Gear Solid 3's ending made me tear up a bit and I was moved by Sniper Wolf's story in MGS 1 and Otakon's story in MGS 2. Dead Rising's so-called "best" ending also stuck with me for a while

This may sound silly, but I was really into the MM X storyline at one time. Zero's origins were an interesting mystery early on and once it became clear who created him there were all those rumors that he murdered the original Mega Man, which unfortunately turned out to be false. I would have loved that dark twist to the original MM storyline, that Wily succeeded in destroying his rival. To this day it bugs me they never went that route. I would have loved a crossover game between Megaman 10 and Mega Man X showing the death of Mega Man. I love dark story lines.

If you don't mind telling me about it, when was that proven false? I'm not really familiar with the X games.

For me the most interesting story bit in the series is the question of just what happened to the original Mega Man. I've heard people say he was repurposed into X, but that doesn't sound right to me, even if only because I don't really like the idea.
