You'd be surprised at how many people really don't care about dirty cartridges, etc. It's just not worth it for pawn shops to clean it themselves.

I once got a Gameboy Pocket off Ebay. It wasn't too bad but when I opened it up to clean it properly I found something INSIDE that looked like old clotted blood.
I put on some gloves and cleaned it off with surgical spirit. No problem.

Reminds me of how one time I bought a pair of pants at Salvation Army, and found, once I put them on, a bloody rag in the pocket. Lovely.

I often look in digust at the second hand wiimotes hanging up in gamestation - some of those wriststrapes are just rank. If it was my shop I would take them off and throw them away as there is no way I would buy one that dirty.

Whenever I get any used controller, I thouroughly clean it, other peoples old finger dirt is just not nice

you guys think tar is bad? I occasionally buy games from a bottom of the barrel goodwill store called "As-is". No receipts for anything, no price tags on anything, sells clothing by the pound, and items are usually dumped out in some tables for people to dig through.

Some of the controllers and systems I pull out of there are the dirtiest nastiest things i've seen and usually broken. Oddly I've pulled gems like sega saturn games, pitfall 2, duck tails 2 and Chrono Trigger out of that place.

Maybe someone cut themselves when they were trying to repair it or something? Glad you cleaned it though
